Job Purpose: The Animal Nutrition Bamboo Prep Tech I reports to the Manager of Animal Nutrition. To cultivate, propagate, identify and harvest bamboo on locally identified sites for the purpose of animal food.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Responsible for digging and planting bamboo as required.
• Harvest (chop down) bamboo from locally identified sites in a manner appropriate for animal consumption.
• Maintaining quality control of the bamboo. This includes washing, cleaning, weighing, tagging, and delivery to animal areas.
• Responsible for daily record keeping of bamboo species harvesting logs.
• Cultivation and propagation of sites for the purpose of harvesting for animal consumption.
• Assist with continued development of the local harvesting program, including site evaluation and species identification.
• Maintenance of all departmental vehicles, tools and equipment.
• Lead tours of Animal Nutrition Department for educational purposes.
• Consulting with keeper staff to assess animal area bamboo requirements.
• Assisting the diet preparation operation as needed.
• Must be willing to support Zoo Atlanta’s Vision, Mission and Values statement
• Any other miscellaneous projects/assignment assigned by Zoo Atlanta’s Animal Nutrition management team.

Experience and Skills:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:

• Must demonstrate the ability to work well with a team and independently with minimal supervision.
• Horticulture experience a plus.
• Special Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: n/a

Driving Requirements: Must have a valid Georgia driver’s license and a clean driving record

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to drive standard transmission vehicle and repeatedly lift 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions.

WORK SCHEDULE: Day shift (7:00 AM - 3:30 PM)
