Backhaul Specialist Job Description

SUMMARY: Primary function of this position is to ensure the proper management of backhaul assignments for the dedicated asset division. The Backhaul Specialist will work under the direction of their assigned Manager/Supervisor to efficiently manage the operations, safety, and improve customer retention through back haul rate negotiation. The position requires professional communication and computer presentation skills. The position must represent the company in a positive image, with employees, customers, and the community always performing in a safe and ethical manner.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Carry out supervisory responsibilities per the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include planning, assigning, and directing work; providing feedback on Driver performance; providing feedback regarding rewarding or disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems. Assists with analyzing performance gaps and creating action plans to address performance issues. Responsible for continuous improvement and innovation related to improving processes and the development of customer relations. Responsible for maintaining a highly engaging culture, motivating employees, and fostering an environment with high levels of teamwork, accountability, communication, and vision for employees.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma is required; an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in management, transportation, or a related field is preferred. At least two years of experience in logistics/transportation is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include the Following

  • The tasks of the Backhaul Specialist will include data entry, tracking and tracing, fielding calls and emails, and providing dispatch backup when needed.
  • Communicates service shortfalls to the Manager/Supervisor on duty.
  • The ideal candidate will be competent in prioritizing and working with little supervision.
  • Book Third Party Freight in accordance with Customer needs, schedule/reschedule appointments, and fill available empty lanes.
  • Responsible for performing moderately complex activities supporting the design, development, and optimization of a backhaul network
  • Responsible for coordinating with dispatch to communicate with customers and shippers regarding schedule changes and pick-ups throughout the day.
  • Responsible for achieving the assigned Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) targets, and making key network decisions including, but not limited to, loaded/empty miles, on-time service, utilization, deadhead, dwell targets, TMW accuracy.
  • Works cross departmental to execute network driver capacity plans while eliminating long-term and short-term imbalances and ensuring service commitments are met.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of DAT, Truckstop, Greenscreens, TMW, Tableau reporting, and Mobility (PeopleNet).
  • Maintains basic knowledge in the trucking industry on Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, seasonality, driver capacity, and demographic trends.
  • Works with the dispatch team to meet/exceed expected service targets through:
  • Accountability in achieving prospective backhaul KPI results.
  • Properly executing the strategies identified by the Director/Manager.
  • Works as a member of the team to successfully complete action plans assigned by the department Manager/Supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
