Job Summary

This position conducts complex background investigations on an “as needed” basis for the Sheriff’s Office. Under the general supervision of the Sheriff’s Training Unit, this position will perform comprehensive background investigations on potential new hires for positions within the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office using industry-standard investigative skills. Incumbent may also assist the Director of Training and Certification in various administrative tasks, when needed.

* * * This is an “as-needed” position. Applicants that are hired are not guaranteed work each week. It currently averages 20 hours per week, but can fluctuate depending on the needs of the Sheriff's Office. * * *

Qualified applicants will be sent a Training & Experience Form and a Personal History Statement Background packet to be due back to Civil Service within 10 days of receipt. Oral Board interviews will be scheduled by the Sheriff's Training/Background Unit as needed.

REQUIRED ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS CHECKLIST - DOCUMENTS MUST BE UPLOADED WITH YOUR APPLICATION:

  • Copy of current driver's license (front side only)
  • Copies of any certificates or training records relevant to the position
  • Copy of DD-214 Member Form 4, if applicable (See RCW 41.04.010 as to how Veteran's Preference is applied)
  • Copy of permanent resident card AKA "green card" (if applicable; MUST be uploaded with your application; front side only)
  • Official transcripts from the school of your highest level of education and transcripts showing proof of any degree. (All transcripts must be official copies; they cannot be uploaded with your application.)

Please note: incumbents will be required to work predominately on-site with the Spokane County Sheriff's Office Training Center; location may vary.

Examples of Duties

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as an exclusive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, but only as a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may not be required to perform all duties and may be required to perform additional, position specific duties.

Plan and independently conduct confidential background investigations for a full range of positions within the Sheriff’s Office.

Interview new hire candidates and references.

Conduct computer background checks to search, review, and analyze information located in local, state, and national databases.

Prepare detailed written reports that accurately reflect the results of each background interview.

Assist the Director of Training and Certification with various administrative tasks, when needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
United States citizen or lawful permanent resident who can read and write the English language.

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must qualify in at least one of the following categories:

  • have a Bachelor’s degree or higher with an equivalent to one (1) year of full-time investigative work with a law enforcement agency, insurance company, or like employment OR
  • have an Associate’s degree with an equivalent to three (3) years of full-time investigative work with a law enforcement agency, insurance company, or like employment OR
  • have a combined total equivalent to five (5) years of full-time investigative work with a law enforcement agency, insurance company, or like employment

Must be able to pass a background investigation.

A valid Driver's License is required at time of application and must be retained throughout employment.
Selection Factors

Knowledge of:


  • civil service law and procedures (desirable)
  • coursework in police science or related subject (highly desirable)
  • investigative procedures

Skilled in:
  • oral and written communication

Ability to:
  • maintain confidentiality of all information
  • prepare detailed written reports that accurately reflect results of background interviews
  • review a personal history form, application, resume, or other applicant information and compare it to Sheriff’s Office hiring policies
  • project a personable persona and serve as an ambassador for the Sheriff’s Office
  • work in a team environment with other Sheriff’s Office and Civil Service personnel
  • use Microsoft computer applications
