POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment

Management, the Assistant Vice President/ Dean of Students will provide

leadership for a student centered culture that promotes academic

achievement, deep co-curricular engagement, diversity, inclusion, and broad

access to wellness and financial resources. This position is a key role which

supports several strategic priorities including implementing college-wide

strategic enrollment management practices that support students from entry

to graduation, offering intensive guidance to students in their first eight weeks

on campus and scaling cohort-based first-year experiences for students

based on successful models. The Assistant Vice President/ Dean of Students

provides vision and leadership for fulfilling the College’s retention and

graduation goals by supporting the Vice President in building the structural

support to achieve these goals. The Assistant Vice President/ Dean of

Students will be responsible for leading and assessing high impact practices

such as experiential learning, community and civic engagement, first year

experience, multi-year retention initiatives focused on the career and

professional development and coordinating with faculty to promote internship

and research opportunities. The AVP/ Dean’s portfolio includes: oversight of

the Senior Director of Wellness and Resources, which focuses on services

including Health and Wellness, Center for Students with Disabilities, Center for

Gender Justice, Veterans’ Affairs emergency funding resources, financial

assistance with basic needs. The Assistant Vice President/ Dean of Students

is also responsible for Career and Professional Development, Student

Government, Student Activities and Community Engagement, Student

Leadership Development, York’s Mentoring programs, Orientation, First Year

Co-curricular programming, Black Male Initiative, and Judicial Affairs. As the

key leader on campus for student affairs, the Assistant Vice President/ Dean

of Students serves on the Behavioral Management Team, Board of York Child

and Family Care Center, York College Association, York Commencement

Committee, and the Committee on Student Academic Progress.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Serves as the chief student advocate for students

  • Provide leadership for the development, implementation and evaluation

of programs, procedures, and activities needed to enrich students'

educational experiences and retention.

  • Develop both short-term and long-term goals for the areas under their

direct supervision to successfully achieve the University and College

mission, vision, goals and objectives.

  • Design innovative approaches to engage students in learning processes;

create school pride and meet students' needs.

  • Support academic momentum by encouraging wellness, help seeking

behavior and early engagement with campus resources

  • Work closely with Marketing and Communications to create avenues to

ensure broad and timely communication to students

  • Oversee the development and coordination of the New Student

Orientation program.

  • Provide proactive educational programs for students, staff and faculty

related to student conduct and rules of engagement in the classroom,

as well as facilitate trainingfor the College's Faculty and Student

Disciplinary Committee, ensuring students are afforded due process

throughout the process.

  • Work closely with the Department of Public Safety and Campus Security

to monitor campus climate and maintain close and positive

relationships with the student body.

  • Stay abreast of relevant legal issues, new University legal policies, and

mandated government reporting as it relates to student affairs.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree with an emphasis in student personnel, counseling,

developmental psychology or related field; applicants with knowledge of

student development theory and practice highly preferred.

  • Eight years of progressive higher education administrative experience

preferably in an undergraduate institution

  • Exceptional communication, problem solving, and management skills.

  • Ability to work in a diverse, urban, educational environment; ability to

develop and interpret policies.

  • Ability to relate well to students, faculty, and other professionals and to

establish and enforce expectations which foster a positive campus

community.

  • Experience with constituents representing diverse school age

populations preferred.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.

The salary range for this appointment is $110,00 - $157,000
