Job Description

The Department of English and Philosophy at Idaho State University invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position in English at the rank of Assistant Professor.

We seek applicants with an active research agenda in American literature, with an established record of excellence in teaching and a specialization related to Latino, Latina, Latinx; Chicano, Chicana, or Chicanx; or Afro-Latino literature and cultures. Research approaches for any period that align with any of the following areas are welcome: indigeneity; borderlands; transnational or comparativist approaches; Latino/a/x narratives in film; or Latino/a/x cultural rhetorics.

Idaho State University is pursuing a cluster hire in “Rurality: Disparity and Difference.” Related to this initiative, we especially encourage candidates whose teaching, research, or service interests involve working with rural, underserved, migrant, heritage Spanish-speaking, and/or indigenous populations.

The Department of English and Philosophy is housed within the ISU College of Arts and Letters, and faculty members across the college work supportively and collaboratively with each other and with College and University leaders to advance teaching, research, and service, and to promote educational excellence, access, and opportunity. The main campus of ISU is located in the city of Pocatello, an urban center of 70,000 people in the foothills of Southeast Idaho, with close access to the national forest, alpine and Nordic skiing, and year-round outdoor recreation. The area around Pocatello is an important agricultural region with numerous, small farming and ranching communities. The land on which Idaho State University’s Pocatello campus sits lies within the traditional and ancestral home of the Shoshone and Bannock peoples, and the Fort Hall Reservation is just fifteen miles from the Pocatello campus. ISU draws students from around the U.S. and across the globe, but a significant percentage of the student body comes from the surrounding communities. Many students are first-generation and non-traditional, and an increasing number are heritage speakers of Spanish.

Applications are due December 15, 2022. Ph.D. in English or a closely related field required by August 1, 2023.

The faculty member in this position will:

  • Teach three courses (9cr.) each semester at a variety of levels, most commonly first-year writing; courses in English major and minor; and intermittently graduate seminars in literature and literary theory;
  • Teach in a variety of modes, including in-seat, asynchronous online, hyflex (with simultaneous in-seat and synchronous online delivery) and distance (video broadcast)
  • Sustain a consistent record of publication in the field of American literature, particularly Latino/a/x literature or a closely related area;
  • Participate in the shared governance of the department and university through engaged, conscientious, and collaborative departmental, university, and professionally-related service;
  • Direct or serve on graduate student project, thesis, and dissertation committees as needed
