Aquatics Programmer

POSITION CONTROL NUMBER: PR1152B FLSA STATUS: N

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Aquatics Programmer serves as a member of the Park Services Division. This position hires, schedules, and supervises seasonal staff in the aquatics facilities in the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation system. Controls inventory, orders and stocks concession items, and develops aquatic fitness classes. Performs basic mechanical tasks and troubleshoots concession issues. Monitors KDHE food handling regulations, customer satisfaction, and staff performance. Assists the Aquatics Supervisor in general pool operations, bid sheets, and requests for proposals (RFPs). Performs other duties as required.

WORK PERFORMED.
30% Implementation of Services: Develops, plans, and coordinates aquatic fitness trends with the assistance of the Aquatics Supervisor. Hires, supervises, and terminates seasonal employees. Follows all KDHE rules and regulations for concessions operations. Collaborates with staff and promotes off-season fitness class. Works flexible hours during season to meet demand of staff and patrons.

30% Information Gathering: Uses existing systems to develop bid sheets, processes paperwork, enters data that meets the requirements of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Tasks include, but not limited to: data entry, scheduling, operating the CivicRec registration and reservation system, and retrieving information from CivicRec for informational reports. Able to conduct a cash audit and report and apply problem-solving skills.

20% Customer Service: Performs customer service and public relations skills such as, but not limited to: answering phones, completing registrations, refunds, addressing complaints, attending public meetings, civic organizations, and school meetings as required.

20% Management of County Owned-Assets: Ensures that all county-owned equipment, pool green space, and facilities are maintained to the standards of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Assists in developing a maintenance plan to replace old equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of:

  • Human resource management including hiring practices, disciplinary procedures, terminations, etc.
  • Supervisory responsibilities and effective leadership skills
  • Federal, State and County laws, resolution, rules and regulation
  • Functions of the various Shawnee County Parks + Recreation divisions.

Ability to:

  • Obtain an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the public
  • Make simple calculations
  • Handle money and make proper change
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Think critically and analyze data.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and County laws, resolutions, rules and regulations.
  • Follow oral and written instruction.

Skill in:

  • Basic aquatics facilities and pool operations
  • Usage of both general and specialized tools utilized in aquatics facility operations
  • Providing leadership and direction to employees
  • Usage of Microsoft Office suite
  • Operation of hand tools and power tools

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Parks and Recreation Management (Administration), Recreation or a related field with course work in park administration, budgeting, child development, public speaking, business, recreation programming, education, psychology, and sociology.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in the recreation field. A Graduate Degree in the areas listed above may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.
  • Two (2) years’ supervisory experience.

Valid Driver’s License and able to operate a County-owned vehicle (HR-2013-2).

  • HR-2013-2: Driving record that shows: No misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic/vehicular offenses (DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, hit and run, etc.) on the driving record that are less than five (5) years old; No more than two (2) at fault or chargeable accidents on their driving record that are less than five (5) years old; No more than two (2) traffic infractions (speeding, failure to yield right of way, etc.) that are less than one (1) year old.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Required to lift fifty (50) pounds.
  • Acquire AFO/CPO certification within six (6) months of date of hire
  • Must be available to work a wide range of schedules, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and review of driving record.

Pay: $19.60 - $21.64 per hour
