Position Title: Animal Welfare Compliance Specialist

Department: Compliance

Reports To: Food Safety Manager

Status: Full-time, Salaried ($55-70K yearly)

JOB SUMMARY ANIMAL WELFARE SPECIALIST

The Animal Welfare Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring all programs social responsibility are carried out at the site level. This includes but is not limited to biosecurity, food safety and quality, animal health and welfare, and environmental programs. This position reports directly to the Food Safety Manager (indirectly to the Farm Compliance Manager) and works closely with the site management and personnel, flock services, and other members of the compliance team.

The Compliance Specialist has a direct responsibility to understand and assist operations in upholding our social responsibility as it pertains to the FDA Egg Rule and all regulations/standards from FDA, SQFI, HACCP, state regulatory bodies, NPIP, UEP, AHC, our customers and more. Overall, the specialist helps coordinate and ensure that activities carried out at the sites are in line with and follow our food safety, biosecurity, welfare, and various compliance protocol to ensure the safety and well-being of our flocks and egg products alike.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists Food Safety and Farm Compliance Managers in the development and implementation of all programs related to compliance and social responsibility as they pertain to applicable regulations and/or standards, including, but not limited to those from FDA, the state, NPIP, UEP, AHC, and customers.
  • Ensure compliance to product safety and quality parameters with regards to company standards, customer requirements, GMP’s, HACCP, USDA, FDA, and other regulations as applicable.
    • Responsible for implementation and verification of the SQF program.
    • Train personnel and enforce food safety standards
    • Auditing of processes procedures and records as related to food safety and HAACP
  • Works with operations teams to ensure that compliance programs are being properly carried out at all sites.
  • Monitors and tracks bird movements and ensures all flock testing activities are carried out according to schedule.
  • Monitors compliance with applicable state and federal regulations, and standards from regulatory bodies and customers
    • Routine travel and site visits to all facilities located in Canby, OR with occasional travel to Moses Lake, WA facilities.
    • Conducts and/or coordinates internal audits of site compliance with programs
    • Initiates, tracks, and trends corrective actions from internal audits
    • Coordinates and prepares the corrective action follow up for customer, regulatory and third-party inspections of the farms.
    • Monitors the progress of the corrective actions for all audit deficiencies.
  • Coordinates all bird testing and environmental testing to ensure complete compliance of timelines.
  • Coordinates, prepares for, and helps managers in leading external audits pertaining to food safety, animal health and welfare, biosecurity, and applicable regulatory programs.
  • Responsible for handling and submitting all reports related to these programs.
  • Develops and coordinates employee training programs related to compliance, including train the trainer workshops at all locations.
  • Maintains records in accordance with document control program.
  • Works with compliance management to develop and continuously improve programs.
  • Performs all duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred
  • 2+ years of experience with regulatory and compliance in poultry, egg or similar industry preferred
  • Experience monitoring compliance with and/or implementing programs relating to compliance or other recognized standards
  • Working knowledge of the poultry industry, with knowledge of state and federal regulations related to poultry and/or egg production and animal welfare standards preferred
  • Licensed as or able to obtain the following licenses/certifications: Pesticide Applicator License, Public Water Operator, HACCP Certified.
  • Ability to demonstrate results of "buy-in" and employee ownership of compliance programs.
  • Must be able to communicate in the English language. Bilingual preferred
  • Strong computer skills with experience in Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe DC, etc.
  • Able to work in various climate conditions including extreme heat and cold environments, walking, standing, and sitting for long periods of time.
