Advise TN is a college advising and capacity building program administered by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission in partnership with Austin Peay State University. The program aims to increase the number of Tennesseans accessing higher education by partnering with high schools to provide full-time professional college advising services. Advisors provide services to all juniors and seniors at participating high schools with the intention of helping students enroll in the postsecondary option where they will be most likely to succeed and persist to a degree or credential.
Location: The Advise TN regional coordinator is a remote employee and will oversee Advise TN implementation in the middle and western part of Tennessee. The Advise TN West territory currently includes: Cheatham County, Dickson County, Dyer County, Gibson County, Hickman County, Lake County, Lauderdale County, and Shelby County. Candidates should reside in a locale that is in close proximity to one or more of these communities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Provide direct supervision and support to a team of assigned Advise TN college advisors in implementing college access and success services to partner high schools, students, parents, and communities.
  • Coach and develop college advisors to foster enthusiasm, improve skills, build comradery and achieve desired student outcomes.
  • Assist program director in the identification, hiring, training and evaluation of Advise TN college advisors.
  • Train and evaluate advisor performance to ensure compliance with Advise TN policies, procedures and activities at the regional and partner school levels.
  • Develop, in collaboration with program staff, Advise TN policies, procedures, guidelines, forms, reports and other documents relative to implementation of the Advise TN program.
  • Assist in the implementation of statewide college access and success initiatives including, but not limited to, Path to College Events, CollegeforTN.org, TN FAFSA Frenzy, etc.


Develop strategies to expand the expertise and efficacy of college advisors with the ultimate goal of improving student outcomes (i.e., college-going rate) and expanding program impact.
  • In partnership with the Advise TN program director, develop both regional and statewide professional development plans for college advisors and partner high school staff.
  • Host regular meetings of college advisors and foster a supportive, team environment and provide training and professional development.

Serve as the liaison between partner high schools, college advisors, and program staff.
  • Identify and disseminate information regarding data-driven, student-level college access interventions which positively impact student outcomes to college advisors and other Commission staff.

Ensure compliance with data collection and evaluation procedures to assess program impact..
  • Provide oversight to ensure required student-level data is consistently collected and documented according to established policies and procedure.
  • Assist program staff and college advisors in identifying, collecting and interpreting key progress and outcome variables to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
  • Submit data reports to the program director and other commission staff as requested.

Establish productive working relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers in assigned partner high schools. Encourage and facilitate community-based partnership development.
  • Identify key stakeholders in assigned region and assist in building and enhancing Advise TN’s network and partnership opportunities.
  • Actively facilitate positive relationships with partner school staff to troubleshoot issues and ensure services are implemented with fidelity.
  • Seek feedback from partner school staff regarding areas for program growth and improvement.
  • Develop and implement strategies to foster sustainable relationships between higher education institutions, college advisors, and partner high school staff.

  • Must demonstrate a clear knowledge of college admissions, recruitment, outreach and financial aid processes and strategies used to improve postsecondary enrollment rates.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of public education in Tennessee
  • The ability and willingness to travel regularly and extensively to visit partner high schools, attend professional development, and to meetings at THEC in Nashville. Some overnight travel may be required on a monthly basis.
  • Proficiency with computers, internet, and Microsoft Office software.


Physical Requirements
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.


Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Supervisory experience including personnel training and evaluation.
  • Minimum of three years recruitment, outreach, policy, student support, education and/or counseling experience. K – 12 and/or college access experience preferred.
  • Successfully pass Federal and State background screening.
