Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has successfully grown its education and research programs in additive manufacturing during the last few years. This includes investment in laser powder bed, electron beam powder bed and metal binder jet additive machines, adding new courses and degree programs, introducing industrial training opportunities and support, and continuing to advance cutting edge research that is transferable to industry. Recent large-scale funding awards have driven even more growth in our additive manufacturing research enterprise requiring additional support to advance our efforts.
The NextManufacturing Center at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking an Additive Manufacturing Technician to support the continued growth and success of its additive manufacturing research and education programs. The Additive Manufacturing Technician will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the entire additive manufacturing laboratory and its equipment and reports to the NextManufacturing Center Executive Director. The individual will work alongside faculty, students and staff to plan, execute and support the needs of the center including the setup and execution of experimental builds for research projects as well as development and manufacture of parts for customers using our direct and indirect metals additive equipment.
Core responsibilities will include:
  • Responsible for day-to-day equipment operations
  • Ensure all equipment is accurately maintained and running efficiently. Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, cooling and gas systems as needed
  • Maintain and coordinate the schedule and work performed
  • Maintain raw material and supply inventory
  • Coordinate disposal of hazardous materials and other related items with Environmental Health & Safety
  • Provide support to faculty, students, staff and external partners who utilize the equipment and services available in the laboratory
  • Provide guidance and training as needed to students to support their additive manufacturing research
  • Use STL CAD files and Magics software
  • Maintain and promote a positive and safe work environment
You should demonstrate:
  • Proven communication skills and dedication to building strong working relationships in a diverse workplace
  • Working closely with students with varying levels of knowledge and experience to support research projects
  • Excellent time management and the able to work overtime and long hours if needed
Physical Requirements:
Primarily standing, concrete floor and frequently walking throughout manufacturing and related laboratories. Requires frequent lifting and moving of materials, supplies, parts, tools and equipment. Requires high manual dexterity, operation of hand tools and power tools. Must be comfortable working in a laboratory or industrial environment with a low to moderate level of background noise for extended periods of time. Ability to manually maneuver up to 75 lbs, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs is required.
Work Environment:
Work will take place in the additive manufacturing and related laboratories, and includes the handling of metal powders used in additive machines. The individual must be able to wear a respirator during powder handling tasks and other typical laboratory safety equipment such as safety glasses and gloves.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic mechanical, math and digital literacy
  • 3+ years of metal additive manufacturing experience
  • Excellent understanding of inner machine workings and external processes
  • Well practiced with machine set up, operation, maintenance and powder processing
  • Proficient with CAD files and MS office
  • Skills for instructing/training additive machine operations to students and external customers
  • Talented with hand tools and measuring instruments
  • Familiar with general machine shop equipment and practices
  • Strong organizational/planning skills and attention to detail
Preferred qualifications:
  • Proficient with Solidworks and Magics
  • Understanding of post processing and QA processes for additive manufactured parts
  • Experience operating laser powder bed fusion and binder jetting equipment systems
  • Experience operating wire-cut electrical discharge machines (EDM)
  • Experience operating vacuum ovens and furnaces
  • Experience with safe handling and storage of metal powders
  • Experience with engineering alloys including stainless steels, aluminum, titanium and nickel based alloys
  • Experience with metallurgy, metal casting and/or welding
