22-23 World Relief Economic & Housing Support Specialist Job at AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps Washington, DC

World Relief Western Washington (WRWW) envisions every refugee and immigrant welcomed by community, rooted in community and empowered for community. WRWW’s Bellingham location is a newly-opened site supporting refugee resettlement and integration in the northwest corner of Washington State. WRWW works with the government, local community partners, and volunteers to welcome and support individuals and families arriving through the US Refugee Admissions Program. Newly arrived refugees face multiple barriers to self-sufficiency. Significant among these are a lack of familiarity with the financial and employment systems in the United States along with a lack of access to stable, affordable housing. These factors—financial literacy, job readiness and housing stability—interact with and influence one another. An acute challenge in one of these areas can lead to challenges in others; stability and support in one of these areas can help stabilize the others. The AmeriCorps member will provide essential education on financial literacy and job readiness through individual sessions with participants and group workshops. In addition, the member will assist participants in navigating the complex process of applying for and securing both employment and housing. In providing this support, the member will walk with refugees on their journey from chaos and upheaval into stability and long-term flourishing.

Member Duties : Depending on the particular needs, strengths and challenges of participants, the AmeriCorps member will coordinate group instruction as well as one-on-one coaching in three primary areas related to Economic Opportunity: Financial Literacy, Job Readiness and Housing. Specific tasks related to financial literacy include developing curriculum to provide during financial literacy orientations for new refugee families, creating budgets with program participants, and providing practical assistance with obtaining and utilizing bank accounts and Electronic Benefits cards. Functions associated with Job Readiness include interacting with participants to develop resumes, coordinating workshops with a focus on workplace skills, and assisting refugees with researching and applying for appropriate jobs. The member will also assist the WRWW team in providing furniture and other needed items to families as well as locating and applying for suitable, affordable housing.
