New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award winning child welfare, health and social service agency in NYC with 40 years of experience in serving children with special needs and their families. NAC is currently seeking qualified candidates to work in our grant-funded Court-Involved Youth Mental Health Initiative, called Youth Strong. NAC’s Youth Strong program aims to prevent adolescents from becoming involved in the juvenile justice system by providing clinical mental health screenings and assessments, adolescent discussion groups, parenting skills groups, and programming support services. Applicants must be strength-based, culturally competent and committed to youth development and youth empowerment. This position supports NAC’s mission to provide the highest quality care by complying with regulatory guidelines and meeting agency standards. This position incorporates both program planning and clinical services.

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Carry out programming duties for Youth Strong, a youth development program providing support to adolescents at-risk of involvement in the juvenile justice system, by planning creative educational and clinical agendas for group activities and discussion groups.
  • Engage with, support, and supervise 12- through 24-year-old clients, including youth involved in the foster care system, preventive services, and youth with special needs, during weekly discussion groups and educational activities and field trips.
  • Serve as the lead facilitator of clinical youth discussion groups centered on positive adolescent development, self-awareness, and engagement with peers.
  • Serve as leader of youth groups by managing staff on directives and ensuring staff are appropriately maintaining the safety and well-being of each youth participant.
  • Conduct intake interviews with parents of prospective clients to gather information about family history, medical conditions, and youth’s behavioral patterns to assess if youth will be a good fit for the program and to best prepare for work with the youth.
  • Conduct Mental Health Screenings to assess if youth are at-risk for involvement in the Criminal Justice System. Reports include CDI Children’s Depression Inventory; BASC Behavior Assessment Systems for Children; Trauma History Questionnaire; and CRAFFT.
  • Evaluate mental health assessments and make referrals as necessary to further support youth.
  • Develop topics, plan agendas, and co-facilitate monthly parent/caregiver education groups centered on building positive parenting skills and educating about adolescent development.
  • Collaborate with NAC staff and outside organizations to invite facilitators to present valuable information to parents/caregivers.
  • Design and implement incentives to promote attendance and participation of both youth and parents/caregivers.
  • Record group notes following group activities and discussions with the children and parents.
  • Perform administrative duties including making weekly reminder phone calls to families, entering records into Excel database and NAC’s online portal, and preparing materials for weekly groups.
  • Coordinate arrangements with venues, sites, and activity locations, and manage logistics with NAC Transportation Department and other staff.
  • Conduct outreach both internally and within the community as a means of obtaining referrals for the program.
  • Conduct home visits as needed to conduct outreach and complete intake assessments.
  • Participate in case reviews and team meetings to collaborate about participants and ensure they are receiving appropriate services.
  • Serve as task supervisor for Social Work Intern(s).
  • Commitment to work on Saturdays for youth group activities and discussion groups.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related field / MSW preferred but not required.
  • Experience working with youth with disabilities and special needs and their families.
  • Experience facilitating adolescent support groups highly preferred.
  • Experience engaging parents and caregivers.
  • Excellent organizational skills and computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web-based information searches.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
