Job Summary:

The Day Camp Counselor radiates energy and warmth, able to build strong relationships with and between all members and participants. The staff desires to match participants with safe, fun, quality activities that are developed on the foundation of the YMCA of Saginaws mission, vision, and values.

Position in Corporate Structure:

The Day Camp Counselor will report directly to the Youth Program Manager and will work closely with other staff, volunteers, program participants, community partners, and members.

Position Summary:

The Day Camp Counselor brings quality, coordinated activities and services in a wide range of offerings to day camp. The Counselor assist in assigned aspects of the program experience including setup, program implementation, and teardown, by leading the children directly. The Counselor will assist in development and planning with Program Manager. The staff will implement and lead all program curriculums. Focusing on physical activity and nutrition education, these programs are developed on the foundation of the YMCA of Saginaws mission, vision and values. Programs consist of a wide range of activities, including education, movement, art, music, sports.

Essential Functions/Primary Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Have passion and excitement for the YMCA mission, believe in and live out the core values, and enjoy your work!
  • Committed to continuous quality of the program.
  • Maintains high visibility in all program areas with participants, leading programs, and engaging with all participants.
  • Responds to member concerns in a professional and timely manner, utilizing good conflict management and active listening skills, seeking a positive solution-oriented outcome.
  • Maintains high expectations in quality member experience.
  • Maintains all program areas in a safe, clean, and presentable fashion.
  • Manage children by using the 3-step approach to discipline. If inappropriate behavior persists, inform the Program Manager.
  • Document and report all incidents.
  • Facilitate check-in and check-out, ensuring safety for all participants.
  • Participate in staff meeting and/or related meetings.
  • Assist with the Annual Campaign as assigned.

YMCA Competencies:

Demonstrates proficiency in all competencies necessary as defined by the YMCA of the USA Leadership Competency Development Guide.

Essential Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Experience working with groups of children between the ages of 5 and 18.
  • Excellent communication and conflict management skills; able to communicate well both in written form and in public presentation settings.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including timely behaviors.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Attention to detail, and ability to both manage projects and participants.

ADA Requirements:

Working in a recreational facility setting requires sitting, standing, and walking. Position requires lifting up to 50 pounds, reaching above the shoulders, bending at the waist, climbing stairs, squatting, kneeling, and crawling depending on activities scheduled. Individuals must be able to grasp office supplies and equipment, communicate clearly via phone, email, and in person, and be able to work in a climate-controlled environment including fluorescent lighting and air conditioning.
