Position Summary:

The Communications Writer/Editor is responsible for providing writing, editing, and style expertise to the Leading through Learning Global Platform (LTLGP) team. This role will report directly to the Director of Communications and Event and primarily provide writing and editing support with the communications initiatives underway in the project.


The Leading through Learning Global Platform (LTLGP) is a global education learning system for USAID and its partners to enhance thought leadership and education program quality. This project has a five year (three-year base period + two-year option period) and is managed by the Center for Education in USAID’s Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation (DDI). The project was awarded in August of 2020 and TRG is implementing this project as a sub-contractor to the Education Development Center (EDC). Through this project, USAID Washington works to provide timely support to Missions and field-level education projects through face-to-face and virtual technical support, professional development (PD) opportunities, and research and evaluation initiatives.

Primary Role and Responsibilities:

Work with TRG staff to design, implement, and evaluate technology-supported solutions for TRG clients including:


  • Write and edit strategic communications using the USAID Style Guide, The Chicago Manual of Style (17th Edition), and USAID branding conventions for publications—products include, but are not limited to, articles, print products, social media posts, announcements, knowledge product descriptions, among others.
  • Write scripts and/or narratives for multi-media productions (e.g., podcasts, video scripts, etc.).
  • Project manage knowledge products through the review/approval process stages/phases overseen by the LTLGP Communications workstream.
  • Write blogs and articles for LTLGP activities, including interviewing staff, key stakeholders, and members of the Learning Networks and Hubs, transcribing the interviews, and managing the resulting products through the review and clearance process.
  • Provide editorial input for communications products, content, and visuals.
  • Serve as a point of contact for branding, style, and plain language convention consultations.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Communications Specialist / Network Liaison and other comms team members to provide writing and editing expertise on LTLGP activities.
  • Liaise between and work with the Evidence and Learning (E&L) Team and TRG consultants to triage and manage knowledge products (KPs) through copy editing, formatting, and Section 508 compliance review, and publication/dissemination (including quality assurance [QA]).
  • Demonstrate qualities and values of employee ownership by providing the highest level of customer service to the organization and clients, including participating in staff meetings, annual retreats, and other TRG and LTLGP events, committees, and workgroups
  • Draft, format, and send emails and announcements via GovDelivery, USAID’s email marketing solution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Abilities, and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of related experience or master's degree with 5 years of related experience
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a professional writing and communications specialist, with experience in a variety of print and web media publications, especially using The Chicago Manual of Style (17th Edition)
  • Excellent writing, editing, formatting, research, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects simultaneously, work well under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail, effective organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience writing for social media platforms
  • Experience with virtual webinar platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft teams, Google Meet, etc.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience using Microsoft Office Products (i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google apps (i.e., Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides)

Preferred Skills:

  • Prior experience working with USAID or on USAID-funded contracts
  • French or Spanish language fluency
  • Experience with Section 508 Compliance
  • Ability to write and edit is Spanish or French
  • Some experience with graphic or multimedia design
  • Some experience in event management and planning
  • International and/or development experience
  • Experience working with email marketing solutions (e.g., GovDelivery, Constant Contact, Mailchimp)


Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasionally may have to lift up to 15 pounds.
