As a Workforce Education Academic Advisor, you will be responsible for being a key member of the team that helps Workforce Education students pursue their goals.

Workforce Education (https://northseattle.edu/workforce-education) supports a diverse group of students primarily with funding for tuition, books, and transportation while they are students at North Seattle College. We also provide wrap-around supports that help students achieve their educational goals in the face of difficulties they may experience while going to school. This position works closely with an established team that shares a vision of student success.

The Workforce Education Academic Advisor is embedded in the Advising Department (https://northseattle.edu/advising) and participates fully in both the Workforce Education and Advising teams. This position also acts as a liaison between the teams providing each with updates regarding the other. Flexibility is needed to juggle the demands of this dual role.

Minimum salary for this position is: $57,667/yr. (depending on experience)

What you will be working on:

  • Advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) by incorporating an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens into daily advising practice and advocating for historically marginalized students, organizing EDI activities, advocating for policy changes, community engagement, and/or self-advocacy.
  • Assist students in understanding prerequisites for their chosen career pathway and assist with the development of educational, career, and life goals while assessing student progress towards degree or certificate requirements and make appropriate referrals for students in need of academic or personal counseling.
  • Assist students with course selection and the development of individualized educational plans.
  • Assist students with completing applications for graduation.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with career training program coordinators, faculty, and other campus staff.
  • Support and enhance a sense of belonging and success for students from traditionally marginalized populations.
  • Keep the advising team up to date with changes in Workforce Education programs.
  • Document activities, meetings with students and products developed for grant reporting purposes.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to facilitate communication between advising and other departments, including program mapping as it relates to Guided Pathways.
  • Participate in the development of program priorities as a member of the NSC Advising and Student Success Services team.


What you bring as a candidate:
(Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, student development, psychology, human relations, or related field.
  • Two years of experience in an educational setting supporting students’ progress toward their educational goals.
  • Experience with advising, counseling, mentoring, coaching, or providing navigation services for students in pursuit of post-secondary educational goals.
  • Proven track record of advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), such as organizing EDI activities, advocating for policy changes, community engagement, or self-advocacy.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines while being attentive to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience with working effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, such as racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic, and with diverse physical and learning disabilities.
  • Strong understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter, flexible; ability to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with various technologies, including but not limited to student database systems and student success technologies.
  • Prefer knowledge of Workforce Education programs and/or the Worker Retraining, WorkFirst, BFET, and Opportunity Grant programs.


Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
