METER READER

Under regular supervision, installs, exchanges, reads, and repairs water meters as required; inspects, maintains and repairs the City water distribution system, and related appurtenances. Observes all safety precautions as required. Reports to the Water Accountability Supervisor.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Inspects, cleans, maintains and repairs water transmission and distribution systems, and related equipment according to prescribed standards and codes.

Must be able to read meters with accuracy and complete routes within designated time frame.

Performs a variety of technical and maintenance duties, including but not limited to installing, maintaining and repairing water mains; installing, maintaining and installing new service lines, fire hydrants, water meters and appurtenances.

Locates valves in water mains prior to required repairs. Repairs valves, operates water pumps and makes service taps.

Completes daily work orders of assigned task.

Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools. Performs minor maintenance on equipment and tools.

Investigates water usage; restores services as directed. Maintains accurate records of work in progress and completed. Assists other utility crews as required.
Notes and records any deficiencies of installations and appurtenances throughout utility system.

Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including work orders, location reports, activity reports, mileage logs, etc.

Operates a variety of equipment such as vehicle, trucks, trailers, power tools, hand tools, plumbing tools, pumps, generators, pressure cleaner, valve exercising machine, torches, hand-held computers
(porta-processor) and desktop computer.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Public Services supervisors and employees, City employees, engineers, contractors and utility customers.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists other utility crews as required.

Responds to after-hours emergency calls, responds as a member of the severe weather/hurricane response crew.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Training and Experience
Requires high school diploma or GED, and a minimum of one year of experience in wastewater or water system maintenance, plumbing, irrigation systems, building or utilities construction, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver's License. Must undergo Trench Safety training within one year of employment.

Pay: $37,994.00 - $47,186.00 per year
