Wastewater Specialist (Environmental)

Crook County Government, Sundance, Wyoming – Full Time

Crook County, Wyoming is seeking to hire a Wastewater Specialist in the County Planning Office. This position is a full-time position with benefits under the direction of the County Planning Director. The position involves administration of the Crook County Small Wastewater Regulations including consultations with the public and contractors concerning different wastewater system requirements, review of homeowner and contractor test data, review, and determination of system sizing, issuing of permits to construct and final inspection of the of system installation. This position is also responsible for maintaining all records, both written and electronic, related to each permit. This includes maintenance of the integrity of data in the County Small Wastewater GIS database, and other duties as assigned. This position will generally represent the first contact with the public in relation to septic systems and must be courteous, cordial, friendly and concise as well as exercise considerable tact, discretion, and judgment with both written and verbal communication.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Science, Environmental Health Science, Certified Sanitarian, or a closely related field or any combination of education and experience.
  • Specific training in GIS systems with ESRI software experience preferred.
  • Construction experience a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to read and understand Regulations and Technical design/installation information.
  • Discuss septic issues with the general public / contractors including suitability of the site, soils and access.
  • Review septic applications for completeness and compliance with the Crook County Small Wastewater Regulations including review of all calculations for correctness and ensuring appropriate factors of safety are used.
  • Work with homeowners and contractors with septic system compatibility and design.
  • Provides pre-construction and post-construction inspections to ensure compliance with State and County Regulations.
  • Issue permits, accept permit fees in accordance with Department money handling policy.
  • Prepare as built information, document on site information and inspect system construction.
  • Maintain the Septic System GIS Database.
  • Review potential violations and offer suggestions for compliance.
  • Regulation violation enforcement actions
  • Work with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, local municipalities, and other government agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • $50,000 - $55,000 annually
