The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), a Carnegie R1 research university, seeks an ambitious, innovative, and strategic leader with a demonstrated record of building competitive research programs to lead and grow UTEP's research enterprise.

As the lead for the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects, the Vice President for Research (VPR) will advance collaborative research partnerships with federal agencies, corporations, foundations, and research networks to support the scholarly efforts of UTEP's talented faculty and staff across programs in engineering, science, nursing, health sciences, pharmacy, education, business, humanities, and the fine and performing arts.

Reporting directly to the President, the VPR will serve as a member of the President's Cabinet and will work in partnership with academic leadership, institute and center directors, faculty, and staff to enhance a strong culture of institutional support for scholarly and creative activities that will drive forward UTEP's research enterprise.

Job Requirements:


The ideal candidate will be a strategic and collaborative research leader who embodies the mission-driven culture at UTEP. The VPR's core values must reflect the highest level of personal integrity and a demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence. The VPR's leadership and influence will play a significant role in expanding UTEP's ecosystem of internal and external relationships that accelerate discovery, driving progress on the institution's strategic plan. The VPR will be eligible for a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor within an academic unit.

Strong candidates will have the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • A distinguished record of research development and management, partnership engagement, and data-informed decision making, and a strong, working knowledge of the research infrastructure required by R1 universities.
  • Leadership record that demonstrates effective mentorship, communication, and teamwork to accomplish a mission.
  • Experience mentoring and training faculty to secure external research funding from federal and state entities as well as corporations and national laboratories.
  • Experience with pre- and post-award management and ability to build and sustain high quality systems of support for researchers.
  • Experience anticipating and identifying emerging funding opportunities from major sources.
  • Budgeting skills and the propensity to optimize institutional resources to support an efficient and effective research enterprise.
  • A proven track record of creating and adapting systems of support to manage large-scale research programs associated with centers and institutes.
  • A commitment to undergraduate research.
  • The ability to act as a spokesperson and advocate for the University's mission and ambitions to various internal and external constituencies to mobilize innovation, funding opportunities, and research-related opportunities for faculty and students.
  • Experience in partnership engagement and securing research funding from entities across diverse areas of government, industry, foundations, and corporations.
  • Familiarity with research compliance management, including IRBs, IACUCs, export control, and UFI.
  • Understanding of legislative and public policy impacting research.
  • A demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary research programs and experience in expanding interdisciplinary efforts.
  • Awareness of the unique support needs and mechanisms for faculty and students in the arts and humanities.
  • Familiarity with barriers and solutions related to international research collaborations, and an appreciation for the bilingual, multicultural nature of a border community.
