User Services Specialist


Knox College invites applications for the full-time position of User Services Specialist in Information Technology Services, responsible for all aspects of operation and support of technology at the College. The User Services Specialist will be required to interact with end users of varying technical sophistication in a respectful, patient and culturally sensitive manner. This position reports to the Director of User Services.

Essential Duties:

  • Support the technology needs of various College events such as board meetings, homecoming, and presentations by visiting scholars and professionals
  • Provide technical support and setup at College events and functions that may be scheduled during non-business hours
  • Supervision, training and mentoring student employees staffing the help desk and computer labs
  • Engage with faculty to acquire, develop and implement technologies that enhance teaching and learning
  • Coordinate use of computer-based teaching facilities (Labs and Classrooms) and related equipment for classroom instruction and staff training
  • Provide telephone and in person support for hardware, software and network related inquiries

Education and Experience:


Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or 3 years experience in a technical support role in lieu of a degree
  • Strong general computing knowledge and troubleshooting skills in an enterprise network
  • Advanced knowledge of Windows and Mac OS and troubleshooting techniques
  • Strong organizational skills and work ethic
  • Strong desire to learn new and evolving technologies, and to work with diverse faculty and students in implementing those technologies for effective pedagogies and student learning.
  • Experience using and troubleshooting desktop productivity applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Availability to work during non-business hours to provide support for College events and functions
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs and climb ladders
  • Availability for periodic travel to conferences and workshops

Preferred Qualifications:


Experience in the following areas:

  • Strong knowledge of audio visual equipment including sound boards, mixers, audio amplifiers, speakers, video switchers, projection, cameras, microphones and cabling
  • Supervision
  • Project planning
  • Technical support
  • Google, Microsoft and Adobe productivity application support
  • IP network fundamentals and troubleshooting network connectivity issues in an IP based WiFi enterprise network
  • Technology such as printers, scanners and other Internet enabled devices
  • Antivirus software and two factor authentication
  • Configuring and troubleshooting iOS and Android connectivity and application issues
  • Using ticketing systems and creating support documentation
