Overview: A Traffic Control Maintainer is part of a construction team that diverts traffic away from the work area and is expected to help create a safe work zone that ensures that traffic stays out of the way of the workers. TCM’s drive a company vehicle equiped with all necessary tool to set up barricades, signs, variable message boards, arrow boards, and safety barriers that show traffic where to drive. TCM’s must be constantly aware of the construction work being performed, and the traffic activity taking place around them.

Responsibilities: Roles and Responsibilities:

Display a firm understanding of DOT requirements, and Part 6 of the ATSSA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

  • Proficient in reading maps and traffic control plans and specifications.
  • Perform pre-job inspection and inventory equipment needed for the job.
  • Ensure the initial layout and inspect to have devices, including replacements, delivered to the job site prior to installation.
  • Set up barricades, signs, variable message boards, arrow boards, safety barriers, etc. at and around job sites (This includes Detour, Road Work Ahead, End Road Work, and Road Closed signs).
  • Direct movement of traffic through work zone using sign, hand, and flag signals.
  • Retrieve all barricades, signs, boards, etc., at the end of the workday as directed.
  • Maintain all equipment and devices in a safe and working condition.
  • Load all required equipment into vehicle after job is complete.
  • Observe and document any details about drivers who fail to obey signs, speed limits, or other directions (information can be reported to site supervisors, or law enforcement officers).
  • Complete required paperwork, receipts, and time sheets on or before mandatory deadlines.
  • Report any and all unsafe conditions to supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Comply with all safety policies, procedures, and standards of safety.
  • Move from job to job as projects progress.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications: Skills and Qualifications: *

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Prior traffic control experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of trench shoring systems a plus.
  • Must have a current UDOT/ATSSA Traffic Control Technician Certification, or willing to obtain TCT Certification.
  • Must have, or willing to obtain a Class A CDL.
  • Display a willing attitude to learn from others.
  • Possess a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • Focus to work safely in close proximity to the traveling public, heavy equipment, and company personnel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to get to and from work.

  • Able and willing to work long hours including day, night, weekend shifts as needed, and work outside of normal hours.
  • Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
  • Ability to load, safely secure, and unload trucks, trailers, and equipment independently with materials.
  • Ability to do physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.
  • Able to effectively deal with the traveling public.
