Griffith Observatory Theater Technician

Observatory Theater Technicians are part-time, at-will employees of the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks, who work at Griffith Observatory. The Observatory is open to the public 12:00 noon –10:00 p.m. on most weekdays (except Monday) and 10:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. on weekend days (Saturday-Sunday).
Available hours:

  • 5 to 10 hours per week based on schedule and shift availability and the employee’s availability and ability– there is no minimum guarantee of the number of hours worked. Hours will vary.
  • The Observatory is closed to the public on Mondays, but some activities and special events are scheduled for Mondays.
  • The Observatory School Program is conducted most Wednesday–Friday mornings during the school year.

A Griffith Observatory Theater Technician:

  • Operates the 290-seat Samuel Oschin Planetarium domed theater at Griffith Observatory during public planetarium shows. Prepares and controls equipment (including projectors, sound, lighting, master controller, props) and activities during public presentations.
  • Coordinates all activities with the planetarium theater manager and the assigned Observatory Lecturer who is presenting the production live to the audience.
  • Monitors equipment, stage, and patron areas of the theater to ensure patron safety.
  • Tests and troubleshoots equipment and theater environment. Works with other technicians and operators, including outside vendors and experts, to make sure theater is operating.

Prepares log reports regarding theater operation and any problems encountered.
Operates and provides technical and program support for 185-seat Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon presentation theater, including use in the school program, public operation, and special events.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a high school education. Some college education is preferred.
  • Must have 500 hours or more experience involving operation, use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of theatrical equipment, including computer systems, video equipment, audio and lighting, and prop equipment.
  • A working knowledge of Final Cut X, Dream Weaver, and Pro Tools is desirable.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, a good communicator, and able to work under pressure and follow procedures
  • Previous planetarium experience preferred but not necessary
