The Terminal Operations Supervisor reports to the Terminal Operations Manager. The incumbent is responsible for compliance with all Environmental Health and Safety regulations and incumbent assists the Regional Safety Engineer(s) in training employees on safety procedures. The Terminal Operations Supervisor is responsible for all activities in the facility including but not limited to any of the following departments in use at assigned facility: Stockpiling, Shearing, Ship Loading, Container Loading, Barge loading/unloading and Scale Operations. The Terminal Operations Supervisor is also responsible for port-specific security during the night shift. This position directs, coordinates, plans, and monitors production for these departments. This position maintains, safety, security, inventory control, asset management, environmental, and special projects.

Essential Functions:

  • Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
    • Ensures safe work practices and equipment are used at all times and that documentation, inspections, and current practices are in accordance with company safety policies, OSHA and other regulatory guidelines. In addition, provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
    • Ensures all department employees receive timely safety and operational training and that the appropriate documents (signed acknowledgement forms) are
    • Monitors safety program to reduce accident frequency within department, implements new safety ideas/procedures and establishes safety goals.
  • Operational Performance & Best Management Practices
    • See cost center specific functions at the end of this section.
  • Equipment & Maintenance
    • Reviews repair and maintenance needs with the Terminal Operations Manager and Maintenance Manager.
  • Inventory & Quality Control
    • Periodically test commodities for shrink and acceptable quality.
    • Ensures operations stays within acceptable quality and quantity of inventory to meet internal standards.
    • Ensures that reports of any off grade/ off spec materials are discussed with supervisor prior to shipment in order to eliminate quality consumer complaints, avoid downgrades, and eliminate claims.
  • Administrative Management
    • Reviews performance of employees.
    • Monitors supervisory practices to ensure compliance with HR policies, union contracts and for maintaining an acceptable level of morale throughout the yard.
    • Monitors and maintains hourly staff at cost effective and competitive levels.
    • Implements operational goals, based on monthly projections set by management.
  • Shiploading
    • Directs, coordinates and evaluates shiploading and barge operations. Reviews and evaluates shiploading and barge operations with Terminal Operations Manager.
    • Supervises yard and shear personnel in preparing scrap for shipment to customers.
    • Coordinates, sets up, schedules, and manages production employees so that work-in-process is done cost effectively and at competitive levels.
  • Stockpiling
    • Oversees stockpiling on night shift.
    • Oversees rail car unloading on night shift.
  • Shear (Fixed and Mobile)
    • Oversees processing of all shearable material on night shift.
    • Monitors and reports daily production for the nightshift work.
    • Communicates maintenance requirements to Maintenance Manager.

Specific Other Responsibilities (regional, location, compliance, etc.):

The Terminal Operations Supervisor can be directly responsible for supervising up to 30 or more employees on one shift, 5 days a week and possibly Saturdays and Sundays.

Job Conditions:

Regular exposure to all weather conditions, and physical hazards due to the presence of heavy equipment and machinery in the yard and the presence of scrap itself. This position operates 5 to 6 days a week or as needed and requires overtime hours to perform. Dealing with multiple issues regarding scheduling, safety, and maintenance increases pressure.

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

Able to: sit, stand, or walk for up to 12 hours per day; bend, crouch; climb, balance, push/pull, lift or carry up to 50 pounds; hand and finger dexterity to grasp tools and equipment parts to make repairs; able to negotiate over and around uneven surfaces. Visual acuity for close inspection of documents, schematics, and equipment parts for repairs.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent, 5-10 years of manufacturing work experience, with 2-5 years of leadership experience or a combination of education and experience. Prior experience managing and leading a work crew is necessary. Heavy equipment and ship loading background preferred. Previous exposure to working within a unionized environment is a plus. This is a specialized job that requires intensive in-house training. Spanish speaking helpful but not necessary. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a professional manner. Working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook. Must exhibit analytical skills to manage production metrics and implement new technologies. . Ability and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; deal with problems involving several specific variables in or from standard situations.
