Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing accounting duties within the Accounting Operations division that may include billing, AP, AR, payroll or other functional areas within the department in accordance with established policies and procedures.


Primary Functions

  • Processes accounting (AP, AR, Billing, PR, Claims) transactions accurately in various accounting or other systems in compliance with port policies and state laws.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and resolves problems related to compliance with policies or state laws, documentation, communication or system errors.
  • Maintains efficient filing systems and proper record keeping and performs miscellaneous support work such as scanning of invoices and other documents.
  • Organizes and plans responsibilities to meet month end, year end and other deadlines.
  • Collects and provides data to other departments and agencies as requested or required.
  • Fills in and backs up other Technicians during absences or as needed; supports other functional areas of the department as needed.
  • Monitors compliance with port policies and procedures and state RCW’s.
  • Fills in or relieves front desk receptionist duty as necessary.

Required Education and Experience

Associate degree in accounting, bookkeeping, business, or equivalent is required, bachelor’s degree preferred.

Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in comparable accounting positions is required. Experience should include AR, AP, claims processing, payroll, billing, or similar work.


Additional Requirements

Must have strong Excel skills, understanding of accounting principles, and experience processing accounting transactions. Must have excellent verbal (including telephone) and written communication skills. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and departments. Must be versatile and able to multi-task to meet varying deadlines with efficiency. Must be detail oriented and able to complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy. Must also be dependable and have good attendance.

Duties and responsibilities are performed in an office atmosphere. Most of the duties are performed sitting, with the majority of the day spent operating a 10-key calculator, PC, scanner and telephone. Filing will require some bending and minimal lifting. Must be able to lift 5 to 10 pounds occasionally. May work some overtime, as requested.

In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Port of Tacoma and ILWU Local 22, Article VII-Personnel Practices, Section 7.7, Qualified Port employees will have preference on job openings within their own union.

In accordance with the Immigration Control and Reform Act of 1986, all persons offered employment must provide acceptable proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States. Proof will be required prior to employment.

The successful candidate must possess (or obtain within 30 days of employment) a valid driver's license. Candidate must be able to successfully complete a post-offer substance abuse test (includes both drug and alcohol) and background investigation. Candidate must also be able to obtain/maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), which is a program managed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
