Job Description

Overview

The Applied Materials and Manufacturing Group at PNNL is seeking a technician to contribute to the development of high temperature electrolyzers made using innovative metal and ceramics manufacturing and processing approaches. This position will support research in green hydrogen production and contribute to global decarbonization. The position holder will become an integral part of a team that is central to DOE’s Hydrogen "EarthShot" working to dramatically improve materials performance and energy efficiency.


Responsibilities

Position holders will work with researchers to create test specimens using tape casting, laminating, coating, metal cutting, and laser welding. They will also help design, assemble, and operate experimental test equipment.

The position holder will:
  • Operate rotating mechanical equipment, extrusion equipment, screen-printing equipment, mechanical testing equipment, and ovens, furnaces, and autoclaves
  • Perform other activities in preparation for experimentation, during experimentation, and after experimentation, including but not limited to Preparing materials (for example, milling or blending oxide and metal powders)
  • Setting up fixturing
  • Recording data from experiments
  • Tearing down setups
  • Cleaning equipment, managing waste, managing extra materials, etc. after experimentation is complete
  • Tracking use of materials (inventory management)
  • Help develop new procedures and methods to enable complex, non-routine processes
  • Ensure lab equipment is maintained in working condition; conduct start-up testing and calibrations; and troubleshoot and resolve equipment problems.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma/GED and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • Technical Institute Graduate (TIG)/relevant AA degree or higher and 1 year of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in operating mechanical equipment
  • Experience in a research or other environment with frequent non-routine, “first of a kind” operations
  • Demonstrated independent work with responsibility for safety and compliance of self, others, facilities, and equipment
  • Detail-oriented: ability to keep meticulous records and follow detailed procedures correctly
  • Experience in programming or working with industrial controllers and programming environment
  • Experience handling oxide and metal powders
  • Familiarity with ceramics and metal processing
  • Experience in QA/QC requirements, procedures, and calibration requirements
  • Experience in planning and reviewing work from a safety perspective and in developing operating procedures
  • Ability to read, interpret and comprehend machine drawings, written procedures, and instrumentation diagrams
  • Ability to generate and modify mechanical and electrical drawings
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

The position holder will work in research laboratories, which are inherently hazardous working environments. Exposure to mechanical hazards, chemicals, etc., are kept to a minimum and mitigated through the use of controls and the maintenance of a safety-conscious work environment.
