This position assists teachers in planning and implementing individualized, developmentally-appropriate classroom and outdoor play space learning opportunities for young children in accordance with federal, state and local standards and best practices.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in creating and maintaining a developmentally-appropriate learning environment for young children designed to support children in gaining the knowledge and skills they need to be ‘school ready’.
  • Ensures children’s safety at all times, including providing appropriate supervision and maintaining a clean, well-organized classroom.
  • Assists teachers in developing weekly lesson plans that include specific learning objectives, and provides stimulating, developmentally-appropriate activities and experiences – both child and teacher-led - which are aligned with MA Early Learning Standards and the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework.
  • Incorporates the ‘Pyramid Model’ of social-emotional support and intervention into the classroom.
  • Partners with families to support children’s learning, including: providing regular informal communication, weekly written notes and supporting teachers in providing at least two (2) Parent-Teacher conferences and two (2) Home Visits each program year.
  • Works collaboratively with supervisor to develop an Individualized Professional Development Plan to guide training, educational and coaching activities for the program year.
  • Participates in training and other educational activities to promote professional development.
  • Keeps timely, accurate records – including CACFP meal counts.
  • Maintains the highest degree of professionalism at all times, including, but not limited to: adherence to dress code, regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Recognizes and reports suspected abuse and/or neglect to the appropriate authorities as required by law.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times and communicates to others the importance of confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledgeable of Early Childhood Development and developmentally appropriate curriculum practice.
  • Possesses proficient computer skills.

Work Environment

This position operates in classroom and outdoors settings.

Physical Demands

This position will at times require lifting up to 40 pounds, with frequent carrying of up to 25 pounds. Frequent walking, kneeling, crouching and kneeling required.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Minimum one years’ experience working in an early childhood classroom required.
  • Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) Teacher Certificate of Qualification required for age group assigned.

Bilingual in English/Spanish, English/Cape Verdean or Haitian Creole preferred
