This unique opportunity is part of JPL’s Spacecraft Mechanical Engineering Section which is responsible for the architecture of mechanical engineering designs and solutions that enable unprecedented missions and science acquisition. You will work with a team that leads the development of mission enabling technology and end-to-end mechanical systems for JPL projects and missions.

As a Systems Engineer II, you will work with a team that is designing a one-of-a-kind spacecraft for a critical JPL mission. You will help to design and test the largest parachute ever flown on another planet. This feat will require creativity, problem solving, and technical expertise. You will work under the guidance of experienced engineers who will mentor you, allow you to be creative, and encourage questioning everything. You will be a critical team member whose voice will be valued and heard.

In this role, you will:

  • Play a key role in the end to end design, test, and delivery of the largest parachute ever flown on another planet

  • Dive into design details and perform a wide variety of analyses ranging from material selection to dynamics

  • Interact regularly with the parachute and mortar subcontractors to come up with the best solutions

  • Travel occasionally to attend testing and support design reviews

You must have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or a Master’s degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 1 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines.

  • Self-motivation and can work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team structure.

  • Understanding and wide application of basic principles, theories, concepts and techniques in solving mechanical engineering problems, performing trade studies, developing requirements, designing piece-parts and mechanical systems, and providing oversight to the fabrication, assembly, and qualification of hardware resulting in mission success.

  • Excellent communication (oral, written, presentation), interpersonal, and organizational skills.

The hiring range displayed below is specifically for those who will work in or reside in the location listed. In extending an offer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory considers factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s job related skills, experience, knowledge, and relevant education/training. Hiring range for this job may be adjusted based on primary work location outside of Pasadena, California. This adjusted range will be provided to candidates by the Recruiter when applicable.
