About the Role

Camp Hudson is a summer day camp in Hastings-on-Hudson (in Westchester County), just 30 minutes north of New York City. Run by Hudson Lab School, Camp Hudson is seeking a Camp Director to oversee all aspects of our camp operations: From promotion and staffing to curriculum and planning, and management and administrative functions. This position would be full time mid-May through mid-August with meetings, open houses, events and planning that will be completed during the year. In addition to these hours, part time work may be available during the year. Camp experience is preferred.

About Camp Hudson

Camp Hudson is a boutique K-5 summer day camp. Camp Hudson’s mission is to instill a love of learning, to inspire creativity and wonder, and to teach children the process to design and build their big ideas. Camp Hudson has approximately 50 campers each week. Over 7 weeks, camp sessions typically run over 1- and 2-week periods and have unique themes including Superhero Academy, Space Week (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDwLyB2MdNk), and the Hogwarts Invitational. We construct a large-scale project outdoors revolving around the theme. Individually each child is free to create smaller projects on his or her own. We teach safe, appropriate tool usage, along with gardening, art, computational thinking and creative play. Our goal is to foster each child’s confidence that their skills at designing, making and iterating are unlimited—just like their imaginations.

Hudson Lab School is a progressive, project-based K-8 school. We are co-located with Andrus on Hudson, a skilled nursing home situated on 26 acres of scenic lawns and wooded trails overlooking the Hudson River. Hudson Lab School is a place for joyful learning. Responsibilities

Responsibilities include planning staff training, weekly staff planning meetings when camps are in session, overseeing fiscal records and working within a budget, maintaining camp resources and supplies, and interacting with parents, campers, staff and administration as needed. The Director is accountable for the overall management of the program and is specifically responsible for personnel oversight and program development.

Leadership & Vision

  • Build and maintain positive, inclusive and transparent relationships with staff, colleagues, families, and other stakeholders
  • Establish goals and benchmarks and create effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate program components to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board and other constituents.

Recruitment & Retention

  • Develop and implement a year-round marketing strategy to reach goals of camper enrollment. Work with the school founder to develop initiatives to support recruitment and retention strategies and goals. Currently our marketing platforms include the website, email campaigns via Mailchimp, social media marketing, and campus tours set up via Eventbrite, etc.
  • Actively engage the local community to meet with potential campers, parents and partners
  • During camp, oversee parent communications. Also, create a process so that the best photos/videos are being uploaded to social media.

Program Development

  • Develop and oversee programming that is consistent with Hudson Lab School’s commitment to joyful learning and self-exploration. Define schedules, programming, camper groups, staffing, etc.
  • Establish program goals and outcome measures to determine the success of each program component
  • Obtain continual feedback to improve existing programming and services
  • Develop and oversee all systems and procedures of registration and camp administration.
  • Ensure consistency in policies and procedures

Supervision & Staffing

  • Supervise recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, evaluation and mentorship of the camp staff
  • Prepare and lead camp orientation and in-service trainings

Operations

  • Create structures and processes for effective operations and iterate for continuous improvement
  • Build and nurture a culture that is relentlessly focused on high quality service and improving the experience of students and families
  • Oversee business functions including finances, enrollment management, marketing, facilities coordination with Andrus on Hudson, safety and security. Where possible, implement tools and systems to improve and simplify workflows and processes
  • Work with the school founder to track camp budgets and forecasts

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $27,000.00 - $40,000.00 per year
