Substitute Teacher - Idyllwild Arts Academy

Idyllwild Arts Academy welcomes experienced substitute teachers in the following areas:

  • World History
  • US History
  • English (Writing)
  • English (Literature)
  • English as a Second Language
  • Mathematics (any level from Geometry through Calculus)
  • Science (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and/or Environmental Science)

This is a unique opportunity to join the teaching pool of an international boarding arts school community which focuses on pre-professional training for artists, while at the same time emphasizing the importance of academics and interdisciplinary approaches to arts education. We are seeking educators who will support the arts, and appreciate the unique environment of Idyllwild. Idyllwild is a small town located at 5,000 feet on the western slopes of California's San Jacinto Mountains. Even though it seems far from the hustle and bustle of city life, the town and campus frequently host music festivals, prominent speakers and artists, and community events. Also, it is only two hours by car to Los Angeles and San Diego.


Minimum Qualifications


Instruction:

  • At least 3 years of instructional experience in the subject area, at the high school level
  • Excellency with lesson planning
  • Uses a wide range of primary and secondary source materials
  • Highly experienced in skills instruction, including critical thinking and reading, analytical writing, and project-based learning
  • Understands and is experienced in multicultural and global perspectives
  • Single-subject credential optional, though welcome

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Master's Degree or beyond is preferred

Social and Professional:

  • Adheres to the guidelines, goals, and curriculum of the respective department
  • Works effectively in teams, with the ability to work independently
  • Is sensitive to cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, and economic diversity
  • Demonstrates professionalism in all communication and administrative tasks, and with colleagues and supervisors

Personal Qualities:

  • Acts as a model of integrity
  • Familiar with socioemotional needs of high school students
  • Understands and employs professional boundaries between students and teachers
  • Respects confidentiality
  • Has a sense of humor and keeps things in perspective
  • Exercises patience and good listening skills
  • Exhibits flexibility and has the ability to work under pressure
  • Keeps a positive attitude

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has at least three years experience teaching international students
  • Has interest in working and teaching in a community where arts is at the core of the educational experience
  • Has worked within an interdisciplinary curriculum
  • Experience with online education, Zoom platform
