CLASSIFIED EMPLOYMENT - SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN
Morning or Afternoon/Evening Shift

(6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.)
Salary: $18.13 - $23.13 per hour, dependent on experience

Brief Description of Position: La Cañada Unified School District is seeking substitute custodians. The chief responsibilities of a custodian include keeping assigned building areas clean, sanitary, safe and orderly. The substitute custodian covers these responsibilities and performs other related duties as required for any permanent employee who may be absent.

Qualifications:
1. Previous Experience: Six months of experience in cleaning and maintaining building areas, preferably in a school setting or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
2. Education: High school diploma or its equivalent.
3. Licenses: Possess a valid California Driver’s License and be able to qualify for District vehicle insurance coverage.
4. Able to obtain all required federal, state, and local licenses and/or certification as necessary for cleaning materials, equipment, etc.

Work Calendar: As needed during school year, August 17, 2020 through June 3, 2021. Work hours would be 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the morning shift, or 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for the evening shift until the current pandemic is over. The typical evening shift is 2:30 p.m to 11:00 p.m. The service location may be at any site within the District.

Salary Range: Placement on classified salary range 20 is dependent on experience as a custodian. Wage range is $18.13 - $23.13 per hour. This position is not eligible to participate is District benefits plans.

 The applicant should make arrangements with the Human Resources Department to take the written custodian exam consisting of 40 questions related to the duties of a custodian. The applicant must answer at least 28 of the 40 (70%) questions correctly to pass the test. The test can be scheduled between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, by calling Human Resources at (818) 952-8072. Passage of the test is required to continue candidacy.

Custodian Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
 Sweep, mop, scrub, wax and vacuum various floor covers.
 Raise and lower flags.
 Dust, wash and polish furniture and woodwork.
 Replenish restroom supplies and fill dispensers.
 Wash, scrub and disinfect restrooms and shower rooms.
 Clean and polish metal work such as door panels and hand railings.
 Wash chalkboards, windows, walls, sinks and fountains.
 Move, arrange and set up furniture and equipment for sporting and special events and meetings.
 Observe and report the need for repairs and make such minor repairs as time permits.
 Secure all rooms and buildings and arm security system at end of shift.
 Pick up trash and litter, and empty and clean trash and garbage receptacles.
 Do emergency clean-up resulting from vandalism, breakage, spilling or illness.
 Stack and store furniture, equipment and supplies.
 Report unruly student activities, loitering, vandalism or similar situations.
 Keep walkways, hallways and stairs neat and clean at all times.
 Replace light bulbs and make minor, non-technical maintenance repairs.
 Report inoperative security lights.
 Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards.
 Assist in the restoration of buildings and grounds during summer, winter and spring vacations.
 Report rooms that repeatedly take excess time to properly maintain.
 Work with other staff in setting up and operating public address system for assemblies, and promotion/graduation exercises.
 Perform other related work as required.

Must Be Able To:
 Maintain work schedules in performing tasks.
 Use common power cleaning equipment.
 Work effectively without close supervision.
 Perform heavy physical labor within Federal and State guidelines.
 Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
 Maintain cooperative working relationships with supervisor and others contacted in the course of work.

Must Have Knowledge Of:
 Modern cleaning methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
 Household-type hand tool usage.
 Basic safety practices related to cleaning methods.
 Maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.

Physical Requirements:
 Able to bend, stoop, reach and lift above shoulder height.
 Able to walk and stand while working for extended periods of time.
 Able to work in a variety of buildings, facilities and outdoor environments with varying degrees of temperature that may be hot or cold depending on the season of the year.
 Has sufficient strength, agility and dexterity required to perform all essential tasks.
 Manually or with mechanical assistance, be able to move, transport and store shelves, furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks and other supplies.
 Lift, carry, push or pull moderately heavy objects.
