POSITION SUMMARY


This role is a staff position with a broad range of Geological responsibilities as a member of the Houston based Bakken Planning and Design (P&D) team. Hess has a large and competitive position in the Williston Basin, North Dakota. The Bakken has an active continuous drilling program with a focus on efficiencies to maximize cash flow and asset value.


An Operations Geologist with Hess integrates the traditional Operations and Development Geology roles for multiple rigs across the North Dakota Bakken asset. This individual will work with a multidisciplinary team to plan and execute all Geological aspects of the well, including Pore Pressure, Frac Gradient predictions, landing geoprognosis, horizontal geosteering, and lookback reviews. The candidate will be expected to work as an integrated part of the larger Bakken asset team, and collaborate with others in the internal technical community to define and promote best practices.


ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Update structural and isopach interpretations from review of MWD, open hole logs, and seismic data from Hess and offset operated wells.
  • Create and update Pore Pressure / Frac Gradient Predictions.
  • Actively engage in planning and permitting of new wells, including signing up for and completing daily tasks related to process.
  • Maintain appropriate digital databases, including Petrel Studio, Solo Cloud and unstructured data.
  • Work with Drilling Engineers and other members of the Planning and Design team to design horizontal and high angle wells.
  • Work with Geosteerers and Directional Drillers in Real Time Center (RTC) to drill and deliver defect-free wells.
  • Provide target strategy and geosteering support from landing to TD of lateral for multiple drilling rigs. Being on-call during all drilling operations is required.
  • Participate in lookback meetings for wellbore placement and production.
  • Actively seek out opportunities to improve the Operations Geology function and its deliverables (including opportunities for standard work implementation and revisions).
  • Train and mentor rotational Foundation Geologists as needed.
  • Prepare exhibits and provide live or telephonic testimony North Dakota Industrial Commission hearings to obtain well spacing, and field designations as required for team testimony.
  • Support the planning and drilling of Saltwater Disposal wells, core and data acquisition, and quality control.
  • Experience with well site geology and petrophysics:
    • Broad experience in all aspects of the E&P business, including field development, reservoir management, seismic application, drilling, and operations.
    • A proven track record as a Production Geologist working in an integrated multi-disciplinary team.


QUALIFICATIONS


Experience:

  • At least 8 years’ experience in the Oil and Gas industry, operations with extensive exposure to unconventional North American plays, preferably the Bakken.
  • PC literate and experience with application programs for technical analysis, design, and evaluation of projects is needed (Petrel, StarSteer or equivalents a plus).
  • Effective interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and influencing skills consistent with the Hess Ways of Working.
  • Geosteering software knowledge required (StarSteer preferred).
  • PPFG experience.
  • Data Analysis and Python Skills highly beneficial.


Education, Training & Certifications:

  • M.S. degree in Geology
