Job Description Summary
The San Diego Union-Tribune is looking for a digital journalist with a passion for sports to lead a team of seven reporters and four editors. We cover a great sports region that includes Major League Baseball, Division I colleges, women and men’s professional soccer, a great running scene, The PGA and LPGA tournaments, minor league hockey and more.
The Union-Tribune was named California’s best large newspaper in 2019; best in the state for in-depth digital reporting in 2020; and best in digital story presentation in 2021. We are a collaborative newsroom where journalists of all backgrounds work shoulder to shoulder without regard to title or status. Digital publishing is our top priority, and we expect everyone to take a hands-on role.

Job Description
The Sports Editor supervises the sports reporters and columnists, edits and publishes their digital work, collaborates with visual journalists and works closely with three section and quality editors who produce our print sections. The Sports Editor provides vision, standards and real-time feedback on the performance of the group.
Main Job Responsibilities
- Develop a strategy to prioritize digital development, grow readership and digital subscriptions.
- Enroll the staff in planning the future, embracing change.
- Manage reporters and columnists, focusing them on the things they do best and challenging them to achieve at the highest levels in the industry.
- Plan and direct coverage, orchestrate collaboration among groups.
- Edit and publish digital stories, columns and newsletters.
- Record podcasts with staff and guests.
Job Requirements
- Academic degree
- 5+ years of experience as a manager of sports journalists, with a background in both legacy and new media
- Demonstrated expertise in sports and digital journalism.
- Skill as a line editor, ensuing accuracy, style and clarity.
- Organizational skill. Experience in orchestrating complex coverage, making deadlines and collaborating with peers.
- Ability to inspire excellence and lead teams in a work-from-home or remote work setting.
- Commitment to an inclusive and supportive team environment.
