Summary: Under the direction of the Family Support Director or designate, this position is responsible for participating in and supporting a variety of Family Support services. This position is responsible for the provision of quality services for the After School Program, Saturday Respite, Camp Star and assist with Adult programming. The Family Support Specialist will be responsible for initiating a variety of recreational opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities, especially opportunities that promote community integration. The incumbent will participate in and facilitate recreational activities as necessary and assume coordination responsibilities for assigned programs when needed. This position requires a full-time, flexible schedule to allow for optimum program coverage and quality services.

Qualifications:
Associate Degree or equivalent in a health or human service delivery field preferred. Two or more years experience providing direct services to individuals with developmental disabilities. Must be willing to work week-ends and evening hours. Must demonstrate a creative, enthusiastic, hands-on approach to responsibilities. Excellent communication skills required.

Major Position Responsibilities

Responsible for the planning, implementation and coordination of Children and Adult Saturday Respite, After School, Adult Programs (when needed) offering choice and providing enriched, meaningful opportunities.
Will actively work the After School program, ensuring activities are completed and parents receive all pertinent information.

Develop and publish calendar of year-round recreation events for adults with developmental disabilities as determined with the Family Support Director.

Develop and maintain all related service documentation, program evaluations and reports, records, mailings and files relative to the position responsibilities and as assigned by the program administrator. Specialist will provide the After School and Children’s Saturday Program with a schedule of planned activities for each program day.

Serve as an advocate for families and their service needs especially in assisting consumers and their families in accessing community recreational opportunities outside of The Arc.

Facilitate Recreation, After School and Saturday programs as required and assure management oversight and control for all programs.

The Family Support Specialist will work in collaboration with the Family Support Director and Family Support Assistant Director to assure the broad continuum of quality family support services.

Serve as a back up or replacement for program staff as required.

Develop and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with and among all consumers, family members, guardians, volunteers and community members including all agency departments, DDD and other state or local agents.

Develop cooperative relationships with all Union County based recreation departments and assist them in integrating our consumers with their programs.

Responsible for maintaining the Family Support database, the department bulletin board, and providing support to the Family Support Director and Assistant Director with regard to departmental mailings and files.

Conduct home-visits and on-site intakes to register families and consumers for the provision of services.

Responsible for successfully completing all required agency trainings.

This position will attend and participate in all agency and department meetings as required and/or assigned.

This position must fully cooperate in any investigations, internally or externally, with the agency’s licensing agents including the Department of Human Services, Division of Developmental Disabilities staff, or any other duly authorized individual(s) concerning the care and service given to people served by The Arc of Union County.

This position must comply with all agency policies and procedures.

The agency may assign employees to any duties and to any work site it deems necessary in its’ sole discretion.

The incumbent must be able to maneuver persons in wheelchairs and persons who use other ambulation devices and at times, will be required to physically lift, transfer and/or support persons with disabilities. Must be able to apply appropriate physical intervention techniques, when required, in accordance with agency policy.

Must be able to intervene in crisis situations and implement crisis management techniques in accordance with agency policy and procedures.

This position may require driving an agency vehicle or driving a personal vehicle in pursuit of position responsibilities and will require proof of meeting the agency insurability requirements.
