The Office of Child Welfare, part of the Oregon Department of Human Services, is seeking a Social Service Assistant / Case Aide to join our team serving Marion County. In this role, you will support child welfare program caseworkers by actively participating in building meaningful person-centered relationships. This will include actively fostering inclusive and compassionate interactions by affirming and preserving the dignity of the families we support.

What you will be doing:
  • Ensuring that people are treated compassionately and with dignity so that children and family members feel respected and valued.
  • Implement the individual visitation agreement by meeting with the case worker, family, and care giver.
  • Gather information from case providers, clients, their family members, schools, and other resources to plan visits, including the schedule, location, supervision level and safety plan.
  • Meet with clients, family members and care givers to review visitation agreements and guidelines.
  • Complete records requests, medical, school, law enforcement, etc.
  • Maintaining care for children in temporary lodging, related to hygiene, school, appointments, etc.
  • Collaborating with caseworkers, treatment providers, youth, and peers.
  • Reviewing and implementing supervision plans.
  • Actively listening to others and documenting conversations in writing.
Working conditions:
  • Work is done in the office and in the field, including in clients’ homes.
  • Occasional compensated overtime may be required, including night and weekend work.
  • Occasionally, you may work with hostile and/or resistant clients.
What you need to qualify:
  • One year of experience assisting professionals in one or more specialized social programs such as family services, children services, senior services, mental or developmental disability services, substance abuse programs, juvenile corrections programs, or occupational skills programs.
OR
  • Possession of a current certification in child development, early childhood education, addiction counseling preparation or juvenile corrections.
OR
  • 45 quarter hours, or 30 semester hours of college course work in sociology, psychology, early childhood education, criminal justice, human services, juvenile corrections, or occupational skills training.
OR
  • An associate degree in a field not closely related to social work/human services AND six months of human services-related experience (e.g. work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, mental or physical disabilities, juvenile prevention, health, cultural competencies, and/or inadequate housing).
  • A valid driver license and acceptable driving record are required for this position.
Essential Attributes: You do not need to have all these attributes to be considered for this opening; however, the most competitive candidates will have most of them.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to learn other computer software programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working both independently and as a team.
  • Willingness to engage with youth and families understanding of the impact of trauma.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, which include the ability to articulate observations and document in an objective manner.
  • Experience making inclusive decisions that promote safety, respect, and stewardship.
