Position Title: Safety and Security Officer
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Safety Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
Supports the hospital’s Security and Safety Management plan by providing security for staff, patients, visitors, and REHAB property. Controls parking on the hospital grounds and completes required administrative duties. The Safety and Security Officer works under the direction of the Safety Supervisor.

SECURITY OF STAFF, PATIENTS AND VISITORS
  • Enforces REHAB’s security and safety management plan and all security-related operational procedures.
  • Remains highly visible. Patrols grounds and interior. Ensures that all areas are secured. Escorts personnel when necessary.
  • Ensures proper customer service is given to all internal and external customers.
  • Confronts unauthorized persons and handles situations appropriately.
  • Responds immediately to emergencies and threats., Communicates responsively on all communication devices (i.e. pagers, two-way mobile radio, etc.).
  • Accountable for all access control equipment—keys, I.D. badge access software, parking gate, etc.
  • Enforces access and egress security and safety measures. Manages and enforces visitation controls, after-hours access, periods of quarantine or influenza screening, and life safety egress.
  • Assists in the enforcement and oversight of security-sensitive areas—patient health records rooms, nurses station, conference rooms, admissions area, data center, etc.
  • Participates with other departments for managing events, media, and crowd control.
  • Accepts, stores and safeguards lost and found items in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Accepts, stores and safeguards patient valuables. Returns valuables to proper patients upon discharge and/or on request.
  • Participates in all hazard drills (i.e. fire, safety and disaster) as assigned.
  • Conducts security inspection rounds and completes work requests.
  • Participates in required de-escalation training sessions to reinforce responsibilities related to patient safety and care.
  • Attends required Crisis Intervention de-escalation training to reinforce responsibilities related to patient care & safety.
  • Performs duties relative to accomplishing the Rehab Emergency Preparedness function.
  • Assists staff in disaster preparedness training.
PARKING CONTROL
  • Moves parked hospital vehicles as necessary.
  • Issue warnings and citations of unauthorized parked vehicles
  • Assists visitors as necessary to facilitate traffic flow into and out of hospital grounds. Actively directs traffic during emergencies, events, and construction activities.
  • Posts and removes cones, barriers and signs.
  • Enforces parking policy, ADA parking requirements, and issues parking citations when necessary.
ADMINISTRATIVE/RELATED SUPPORT
  • Enhances skills through attending online training, inservices or workshops pertinent to job.
  • Completes required records and reports, including the daily log.
  • Submits and completes incident and accident reports in a timely manner.
  • Assists Safety Supervisor with annual Security and Hazard Vulnerability Analysis.
  • Makes suggestions for improvements to address safety and parking concerns.
  • Assists with minor equipment emergencies (i.e. sink valve shut-off, replacement of emergency lighting in bathrooms, etc.).
  • Runs errands in emergencies; operates the hospital vehicles.
  • Relieves and performs duties of the Telephone Operator, and immediately alerts the hospital staff of all code emergencies.
  • Performs general clerical work as assigned (stuffing envelopes, data entry into the computer, etc.).
  • Moves supplies, equipment and records.

  • Attends and participates in inservices, conferences and educational programs to assure continued professional growth and maintains unit education record.
  • Complies with and updates yearly skills review per policy and timely completes requirements needed to maintain position and/or employment at REHAB.
  • Demonstrates competence with technical skill review of procedures, treatments, and equipment usage.
  • Keeps self updated on hospital and unit announcements, including updated policies and procedures.
  • Offers recommendations to improve processes and/or operations of the department.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects.
  • Interacts openly and professionally while supporting management directives and strategic objectives.
  • Supports and promotes REHAB’s mission, as a positive role model, demonstrating a proactive approach to situations, and practicing REHAB values.

  • Assures that all department and hospital policies are followed.
  • Promotes and adheres to REHAB’s Compliance Program.
  • Identifies, recommends and implements solutions to issues.
  • Participates in REHAB initiatives to improve processes and communication
  • Establishes and keeps current policies and procedures.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SCOPE OF PRACTICE:
The population served includes individuals affected by stroke, orthopedic related conditions, brain and spinal cord injury, amputation, major multiple trauma, and other neurological and medical conditions. REHAB’s patients range from pre-teen to geriatric age ranges.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Licensure:
  • Current State of Hawaii Guard license
  • Current BLS certification

Education:
  • High school graduate or equivalent

Skills/Experience:
  • Strong situational awareness and problem solving capability
  • Willingness to learn and develop
  • History of honesty, truthfulness, financial integrity and fair dealing
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Demonstrated general computer knowledge
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and ability to perform minor equipment maintenance
  • Ability to operate most types of vehicles
  • Ability to work in a team, under stressful situations and emergencies
  • Dependable and able to adapt to change

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Licensure:
  • Valid State of Hawaii driver’s license
  • International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) certification

Skills/Experience:
  • Six (6) months work experience as a Security Guard
  • One (1) year experience of customer service
  • Hospital security experience
  • Parking security experience
