SVCC is located in a rural setting of rolling hills, pine and hardwood forests, and farmland. There is easy access to nearby metropolitan Richmond, Virginia, the state’s capital, as well as Raleigh, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. The area is famous for its two lakes, Gaston and Kerr, and a multitude of state and national parks which offer recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, skiing, jet-skiing, hiking, horseback riding, picnics, and relaxation. The area also offers sports arenas for baseball, softball, soccer and beautiful golf courses. There are cultural activities including various theaters and arts councils offering concerts, plays, and live entertainment, and there are many local festivals held throughout the year.

SVCC is currently seeking applicants for the position of Truck Driving Instructor located at our Truck Driver Training School (TDTS) in South Boston, VA and the Occupational/Technical Center in Blackstone, VA. This position will primarily be in South Boston. The Instructor will prepare students for the necessary skills tests required of the TDTS and of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that are vital to earn class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Responsibilities:
  • Teaching and student advising
  • Properly demonstrate, instruct, and assist students on the proper techniques for backing, vehicle inspections, and highway driving
  • Teach students in the areas of coupling and uncoupling, railroad crossings, breakdown procedures, accident procedures, hours of service and logbooks, map reading, trip planning, and other procedures that help make the transition from the TDTS to the company they choose to work for as seamless as possible
  • Serve on college committees, participate in professional activities, mentor adjunct instructors and may include program development and assessment


Classes taught may be a combination of day, night, and/or weekends and may be located on or off campus or in a correctional center. The Instructor will teach an average of 40 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current Class “A” CDL
  • Extensive truck driving and/or demonstrated training experience
  • Must have a current DOT physical or ability to pass a DOT physical prior to employment
  • Must provide a current driving record from DMV
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Understanding of the community college environment and mission
  • Ability to work effectively with a culturally and educationally diverse student population
  • Sufficient technology skills to work productively in an organization that utilizes significant information and instructional technology resources

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior teaching experience
