Education and Work Experience:

  • Education: High School Diploma required. B.S. in Social Work/Human Services preferred.
  • Work/Professional Experience: 1-year work experience in transitional housing program or day shelter. Training and/or relevant experience with people who are experiencing and/or have a history of mental health challenges, intimate partner violence, substance abuse recovery, homelessness, and knowledge of non-violent crisis milieu management is preferred. Knowledge of Portland Metro based housing and community resources for adult women experiencing homelessness is a plus.

General duties:

  • Monitor the front door for safety and security
  • Answer main phone line
  • Minor cleaning including, sweeping, and mopping
  • Provide refreshments for residents
  • Foster a peaceful, dignified community environment for program participants.
  • Attend all-staff meetings once a month
  • Greet residents, volunteers, donors, and deliveries
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

The candidate must have the capacity to serve diverse people in a culturally sensitive and non-discriminatory manner. The successful candidate will demonstrate good oral communication skills. Basic computer skills are necessary for emailing. The individual hired for this position cannot participate in any form of substance abuse or show evidence of abuse while performing their duties or while present on Salvation Army property.

Physical Requirements:

Position may require long periods of sitting at a desk using a computer and telephone.

Must be able to walk, sit, stand, and bend, on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Must be able to use stairs. Must occasionally lift and move up to 25 lbs.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, hand or feel objects, tools, or controls; to talk or hear; reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

Working Conditions:

Must be able to work with minimal supervision and be comfortable working with a high degree of independence. May be required to make independent decisions that may involve unique or unusual situations and/or complex issues.

This position has access to confidential and private information. It is essential that confidentiality and privacy be observed. An understanding of professional boundaries is required.

The Salvation Army does have a dress code, which will be shared with the successful candidate at the time of employment.
