A highly motivated Research Assistant is sought to join the group of Dr. Vidhya Munnamalai at The Jackson Laboratory Bar Harbor, Maine. Research in the Munnamalai lab is focused on studying inner ear development, genetic causes of hearing loss, cell signaling, gene regulation and DNA repair mechanisms in ear stem cells.
The successful applicant will be trained in a variety of routine and special techniques and methods. The applicant will have the opportunity to learn and perform biochemical, histological, and immunohistochemical techniques as well as confocal imaging. As research assistant he or she will perform independently or assist in laboratory experiments and will have a chance to learn the main concepts in inner ear biology and contribute to scientific publications. Candidates with background in molecular biology and genetics with the goal of attending graduate school after 2-3 years working in the lab are also encouraged to apply. Training will be provided on a 1-1 basis.

Key Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
  • Lab organization including ordering, maintaining and managing stocks, reagents, and lab equipment.
  • Management of mouse colony using specialized software, routine breeding, maintaining pedigreed colonies, genotyping.
  • Collecting and processing tissue samples, recording results in spreadsheets and electronic lab books.
  • Conducting experiments following standard or detailed protocols utilizing a variety of techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA/protein extractions, PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western Blot, histology, immunostaining, microscopy, and cell and organ culture).
  • Collecting experimental data and keeping detailed and accurate records in electronic lab books.
  • Preparation of solutions and media for general use in the lab.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Meeting regularly with supervisor to discuss research assignments.
Required Skills
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in biological science/molecular biology or related subject area
  • Desired skills: basic biochemistry, molecular and cell biology techniques include Q-PCR, molecular cloning, DNA and RNA extraction, protein extraction and western blotting, histology, immunostaing and microscopy.
  • Experience with mouse handling and husbandry skills are preferred but expert training will be provided.
  • Must be organized and capable of keeping a reliable notebook record of experiments (both on paper and electronically).
  • Skilled with computer-based operations including data input, database maintenance and graphic data output (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Photoshop, Prism).
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • After-hours or weekend time will occasionally be required.
  • Level of position to commensurate with years of experience
