Summary:

This is for a part-time Research Assistant position, working 15-20 hours per week. The Research Assistant will provide technical support in a laboratory involved in research of the cellular and molecular processes underlying traumatic brain injury (TBI) and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer s and Parkinson s disease through study of the human brain and animal models. This position will involve bench research techniques including immunofluorescence, fluorescence microscopy, and image analysis. It will also involve work with mice, including colony maintenance, surgical procedures, and behavioral studies.

Responsibilities:

  • Handle mice, maintain mouse breeding colony, collect tissue for genotyping, perform mouse surgical procedures and behavioral testing.
  • Help maintain animal inventory records.
  • Tissue collection, processing, sectioning, staining and immunohistological labeling, and imaging.
  • Analysis of acquired images using programs such as ImageJ.
  • Organize and maintain data records in lab notebooks and in computer spreadsheets, graph and perform statistical analysis on results.
  • Present results to PI and other lab members in group settings.
  • Participate in lab discussions of research journal articles and other relevant topics.
  • Operate standard lab equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, balances, and pH meters.
  • Make laboratory solutions and prepare supplies for group use.
  • Help maintain equipment in good working order and keep maintenance records up to date.
  • Work as a member of a team but must be able to work independently in the laboratory and animal facility.
  • Assisting lab members in a variety of laboratory techniques as required/assigned.
  • Assist with other lab maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, ordering, onboarding and training of new lab members, and preparation for lab safety inspections.

Position Requirements:

  • Experience handling and working with mice.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a laboratory setting, academic or employment situations.
  • Minimum of 2 years of college level education with a background in biological sciences.
  • Ability to work in a team AND independently, reporting significant issues as necessary.

Knowledge and Experience:

Experience working in a laboratory setting; experience working with mice; knowledge of good laboratory and safety practices; experience working with standard laboratory equipment; good written and verbal communication skills.
