Anticipated Vacancy


Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a responsible position in the Newborn Screening (NBS) Program which involves the tracking and surveillance of the statewide screening program for all newborns born in Florida. This position is expected to be knowledgable about a variety of rare metabolic, genetic, endocrine, hematologic, pulmonologic, immune, and cardiac disorders and provide guidance and technical assistance to medical providers throughout Florida on newborn screening.


Receives, evaluates, and interprets newborn screening results received from the state laboratory for newborns with abnormal lab results for conditions included in the screening. Coordinates with and distributes data to appropriate CMS Referral Centers, hospitals, and/or physicians and county public health units regarding newborns with abnormal lab reports. This also includes contacting parents to obtain information and make recommendations as noted on the newborn screening laboratory report. Data is required to be provided to the appropriate contracted referral center quickly after receipt of the screening results from the state laboratory to expedite diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment of the newborns.



Provides case management to newborns with abnormal test results for conditions screened through newborn screening which includes monitoring the newborn screening data system for repeat lab results, complete follow-up activities, which may include calls to parents and health care providers; analyzing case reports received from CMS Referral Centers, inputting information received from CMS Referral Centers in the appropriate data systems, and providing monthly statistical reports to the CMS Referral Centers to monitor follow-up and compliance with the newborn screening protocols.



To an assigned coverage area of the state, provides technical assistance and education to birthing facilities, care providers and others as deemed necessary, which requires travel throughout the year. Develops training and educational materials for birthing facilities, care providers, parents, and others as deemed appropriate.



Performs quality assurance activities, which includes all cases received from the lab and case reports that have been reviewed and closed.



Participates in programmatic monitoring for the Newborn Screening Referral Centers and for the CMS Long Term Genetics Program, which requires periodic travel.



Other related duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of computers, especially Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to learn program-specific computer applications. Be able to interpret laboratory results and take appropriate actions. Good communication skills both verbal and written. The ability to prioritize workload. Experience in providing training and technical assistance to large and small groups. The ability to conduct programmatic and contract monitoring. Work as a team member.


Qualifications:
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with Section 464, Florida Statutes
  • Minimum one year of experience as a RN
  • Valid State of Florida Driver’s License
