POSITION SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides competent technical skills in the operation of equipment used to record electroencephalograms. Provides quality electroencephalographic examinations and ensures proper care and operation of equipment used. Provides long-term monitoring for epilepsy.

FUNCTIONS/BEHAVIORS

  • Performs electroencephalograms (Routine, STAT) on inpatients and outpatients to the standards of the laboratory on any patient as requested, including in the EEG Laboratory, Emergency Department, psychiatric and controlled access units, and inpatient adult and pediatric units.
  • Instructs and prepares patient for examination, measures and accurately applies electrodes according to the International 10-20 EEG System.
  • Writes comprehensive patient history gathering appropriate information from patient regarding relevant drugs, diseases, symptoms, etc. and records information on EEG.
  • Performs calibration checks of equipment.
  • Starting with a standardized pattern of connections, observes any peculiarities during the course of a test which may require adjustment or relocation of machine connections to obtain a more factual and accurate reading, and to isolate, emphasize and reveal patient abnormalities based on patient health history and recording indications.
  • Exercises considerable initiative and judgment in making machine adjustments during course of test to reveal sources and areas of abnormalities and suspicious findings.
  • Recognizes artifacts, (patient or environmental). Documents, eliminates or takes the proper measures to monitor artifact.
  • Performs activating procedures (hyperventilation, photic stimulation, sleep) according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Completes all procedure associated paperwork including but not limited to: billing, tracking, and electronic medical record entries.
  • Performs long-term monitoring (LTM) of electroencephalograph tracings in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU).
  • Identifies equipment malfunctions, troubleshoots to correct, or contacts the vendor.
  • Performs other neurodiagnostic or administrative duties as may be requested or assigned.
  • Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the age-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
  • Appropriately adapts assigned patient assessment, treatment and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific and other developmental needs of each patient served.

SUPERVISION

Administrative supervision is received from the Executive Director and Assistant Director of the Neurodiagnostic Center and professional/technical supervision from Medical Director, Neurodiagnostic Center and the Chief END Technologist. May receive training, orientation, or guidance from END Technologists I/II or EEG Technician II. May assist in the orientation and training of newly assigned staff or students.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

- High school diploma or equivalent; or, associates, bachelor’s or master’s degree is required.

- A minimum of one (1) year experience independently performing EEG procedures in a hospital or clinical setting is required

- Must have and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) credential.

- Completion of an accredited electroneurodiagnostic (END) school or a military END training program is preferred

- No experience is required if applicant has completed an accredited END school or a military END training program

ACCURACY

Skill in creating electroencephalograms and in recording data. Proficiency in all duties. Thoroughness in reporting information to superiors.

EQUIPMENT

Familiarity with and proficiency in the use of digital EEG recording systems and computer software available in the Health System is required.

Experience with windows based technology; Microsoft offices, word, excel and access. Have and maintain a familiarity with latest changes and improvements in equipment and techniques related to job requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Encounters conditions and hazards common to patient care areas of a hospital.

OTHER

Bilingual ability in Spanish/English is preferred. May be required to operate the equipment in patient rooms and other areas of hospital. May work with disturbed and seriously ill patients who may be comatose and with children who may be uncooperative. Must be emotionally stable and physically fit. Must successfully complete the pre-employment/post job offer health screening examination and the annual screening, each year thereafter, as an employee
