Summary of Role

The QEHS Supervisor is accountable for the Quality and Environmental, Health and Food Safety Program at our production facility. The QEHS Supervisor provides site leadership in Health & Food Safety, Quality Assurance & Control and Environmental Compliance. Specifically, this individual is accountable for the development and implementation of strategies, systems and programs to be executed with production management and the entire team towards the goals of zero health and safety incidents, perfectly safe food as defined by FSMA, and 100% compliance to all FDA, EPA and OSHA regulations. The QEHS Supervisor works in collaboration with Human Resources on OSHA related employee safety.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Apply advanced understanding of GMP, HACCP, HARP-C, Safe Quality Food Principles, Food Defense Principles, and Quality Management Systems.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of processes and procedures to support achievement of audit requirements e.g. SQF Level 2, and supporting prerequisite programs.
  • Be the site SQF practitioner for audit.
  • Facilitate internal, customer, third-party audits and self-inspections and direct corrective action.
  • Prepare, review and submit compliance reports to local, state and federal environmental regulatory agencies. Maintain documentation for regulatory compliance, including label approvals, and laboratory analysis demonstrating compliance.
  • Perform daily record review and back-up to QA Technician and HACCP Coordinator.
  • Manage and update all environmental programs and permits for wastewater discharge, storm water, hazardous waste, SPCC, and other regulatory requirements as they pertain to manufacturing facility
  • Lead execution and improvement of all Quality Assurance and EHS Systems, Programs, Policies and Procedures.
  • Lead execution of a strong CAPA (Corrective Action / Preventative Action) program that drives site improvement in Quality, Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Maintain the necessary training modules to ensure that all team members understand and can execute established procedures while meeting all FDA, EPA, OSHA, DOT and GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) requirements. HR will partner with the QEHS Supervisor to revise and present training.
  • Deliver training and perform self-audit activities to ensure the company’s objectives in assigned areas meet or exceed standards.
  • Regularly inspect and monitor the facility to ensure that the plant is fully operating in compliance with FSMA, FDA GMP, OSHA, EPA regulations and GFSI guidelines.
  • Work with Human Resources in root cause analysis of accidents and incidents and collaborate with peers to develop strategies to reduce the frequency and severity of accidents. Develop and implement activities and policies to establish a culture of health and safety.
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures.
  • Manage departments spending and evaluate financial metrics, including but not limited to vendor selection, material & supplies, repair & maintenance, and labor cost.
  • Lead site incident management with regards to food safety, environmental compliance and safety. Examples include FDA Recall, OSHA and EPA notifications.
  • Determine application & methodology for analytical, microbiological, or bacteriological testing protocols, and implement and direct Quality Assurance in protocol.
  • Understand and apply moderately complex mathematical concepts, to include statistics, in support of continuous improvement and statistical process control efforts
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Lead Quality Department team members and their work in support of departmental objectives.
  • Provide Management oversight to the Sanitation Department
  • Perform performance reviews, provide coaching, approve labor hours, and perform all managerial duties in line with Company requirements.

Desired Candidate Profile, Education & Skills

Our ideal QEHS Supervisor is well rounded in each of the areas of role expertise, with significant previous experience in food safety management and quality program development. The successful incumbent must be someone who enjoys developing programs and working with our team members to reinforce Upton’s Naturals high standards. Someone who has the ability to organize and plan work, lead a team toward a common goal, continue their education in areas relevant to the role, and solve problems as they come up will find this role engaging and challenging.

A Bachelor's Degree in field relevant to position requirements is required, as is at least 4 years of relevant work experience. Food manufacturing experience is required, as is previous experience with food safety and quality audit preparation and compliance. Previous management of a safety program is preferred. The successful candidate should hold relevant certifications to position e.g. PCQI, HACCP, SQF. Good computer skills are required, including MS Excel.

Compensation range for this role is: $80K-$95K depending on experience.

This is not a remote position - the QEHS Supervisor will be required to work onsite Monday through Friday.
