Quality Assurance Technician

, is seeking a QA Laboratory Technician. The QA technician under the direction of management from verbal and/or written instruction, sets up equipment and performs a variety of analyses on raw materials, in-process materials and products. Non-production samples are frequently analyzed for Research, Development, Sales and Environmental Control.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) and successful completion of 2 years of college level chemistry/and/or experience in a quality laboratory or equivalent.
  • Must be able to work any shift, including weekends, overtime, holidays, with workdays from 8-12 hours.
  • Must be able to pass a 12-minute timed test that measures a candidate's ability to learn a specific job, solve problems, understand instructions and apply knowledge to new situations.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require moving your whole body with considerable use of arms and legs, such as reaching, bending, twisting, standing, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials with potential for dust explosion.
  • Must be able to lift, push, or pull 50 lb. frequently and through mechanical means roll or handle drums weighing up to 500 lb. occasionally.
  • Must be able to work some heights, climb stairs frequently, and climb railcar and tanker ladders occasionally.
  • Must be able to wear a cartridge type respirator.

Technical Knowledge

  • Solid computer background and use in various computer software and applications.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated skill using a variety of analytical testing instruments and equipment.
  • Required fundamental chemistry and knowledge of chemical structures, nomenclature and properties.
  • Ability to conduct data analysis, technical report and procedure writing and determination of conclusions is required.
  • Demonstrated experience to analyze and evaluate technical data and communicate results both orally and in writing.

Laboratory Health, Safety & Hygiene

  • Compliant with and knowledgeable of Laboratory Safety Procedures and OSHA regulations.
  • Must be able to work safely with hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas and performing work tasks requiring the use of PPE.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • The technician compiles, records, and reports all data, makes minor repairs and adjustments to lab equipment, and calculates and communicates process analysis to the chemical operators or shipping personnel.
  • Performs qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials, in process streams, products and environmental control.
  • Performs analysis on non-production or special project samples as received from Research, Development, Sales or Environmental Control under the direction of QC Manager/QA Leader or to such other person(s) as may be designated by management from time to time.
  • Determines such physical properties as: melting and softening points, refractive index, pH, specific gravity and viscosity.
  • Determines purity and chemical properties using analytical techniques such as: potentiometric titration, gravimetric, color metric, volumetric, chromatographic and spectrophotometric.
  • Prepares samples for analysis by melting, dissolving, weighing, filtering, diluting, extracting, distilling or blending.
  • Prepares and standardizes chemical reagents to an accuracy specified by standard procedures.
  • Sets up, dismantles, maintains, standardize, calibrates and performs minor repair on lab equipment.
  • Calculates and communicates process analysis and adjustments to operators or shipping personnel, based on the analysis results.
  • Assembles, records and reports data on all samples for future reference. Prepares a retained sample to be saved for possible recheck of analytical results.
  • Transfers toxic and flammable materials, compressed gas, acids and bases from large container to lab bottles and to lab equipment.
  • Inputs data to the QC database and DBQ as needed.
  • Trains new QC Lab Techs.
  • Keeps laboratory equipment, laboratory and/or office clean and neat.
  • Patrols and inspects work areas or units to detect leaks and equipment malfunctions, monitors operating conditions and shuts equipment down if necessary.
  • Assists in cleaning of any spill during the transfer, manufacture, or related activities.
  • Troubleshoots equipment and process problems along with monitoring gauges, recording instruments, flowmeters, and other indicators to ensure that specified conditions are maintained and operational systems are working properly.
  • Performs safety inspections in your area that may include eye wash stations, safety showers, hazardous waste satellite areas, ladder storage areas, labeling, and all other safety requirements or process as deemed necessary by management.
  • Provides information to management and co-workers by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Follows and abides by all emergency procedures.
  • Empties lab trash containers, broken glass containers, lab waste containers, washes lab glassware, sample bottles and performs housekeeping.
  • Properly operates lab equipment and notifies the QC Manager/QA Leader and/or maintenance of equipment malfunctions.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by management or leader.
  • All of the above duties are to be performed in the safest most efficient manner possible to achieve the optimum production of a quality product.
