Position Title: Lab Technician-Data Entry

Under indirect supervision, prepares samples, tests, and reports results on various stages of products for mechanical and chemical requirements. Compiles and evaluates statistical data to determine and maintain quality and reliability of products. Is a key member of the quality/QA team ensuring materials used and products produced meet specifications and that the company can mitigate risk of using or releasing flawed material.

Summary of Responsibilities and Competencies (The list /description is not intended to be exhaustive)

I. Safety

1 Participation: Understand and follow the Safety Program, safety rules and protocols, of the facility and specific to work areas. Actively participate in any applicable training, as well as collaborate with others and express understanding and interpretation of safety practices. Generally act safe, use caution and protect self.

2 Consciousness: At all times, remain aware of the safety of self and others. Remain aware that safety is in the best interest of all and, therefore, is a critical component of all teamwork initiatives and job functions.

3 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Always wear required PPE per work area requirements when in the specific work area. Obey all signage directing the use of PPE.

  • PPE includes regularly using Safety Glasses, Hard Hat, Gloves, Ear Plugs, Face Shield if grinding, Kevlar Arm Guards, LOTO Lock and Steel-toed Boots. Additional PPE such as fall protection, respirators, safety belts, welding gloves and welding helmet, etc. as required.

Flexibility: Perform any other work assignments as directed by a supervisor or manager. Generally primary job responsibility / production station only accounts for 51% or more of responsibilities.

III. Excellence

Accountable For: Accountable for operating in a safe manner testing equipment and recording results as indicated by supervisor and reporting any nonconformance issues with product or issues with the equipment; responsible for following the applicable procedures. Accountabilities and relevant controlled documentation pertained to this work stations have been defined according with the Training Matrix.

1 Quality a. Lab Technical Operation and Testing

Collect samples for testing including from steel coil, pipe and tubing products. Organize samples for required testing in a timely, productive, and safe manner. Prepare samples to the correct dimension for testing and/or evaluation.

  • Perform and be able to evaluate results on the following tests:

1. Mechanical testing,

2. Chemical testing,

3. Charpy testing,

4. Hardness testing – Rockwell B and Micro,

5. Metallographic testing – grain structures, annealing and weld micros,

6. Defect evaluation of samples

  • Organize and input results in the programs defined by Company.
  • Must be familiar and able operate the nondestructive testing equipment including ultrasonic equipment and visual inspection.
  • Ability and general knowledge to safely operate saw, HAAS or milling machine, grinder, polish machine, puck maker, shear, acetylene torch, plasma arc torch, hand grinder, forklift, cranes and other related shop equipment.
  • Assists Quality Supervisor with production reporting, consumables and tools/parts inventory levels, and product inventory as needed.
  • Perform any and all other operational requirements for safe and efficient use including any lock-out tag-out procedures. b. Other: Temporarily assume the duties and responsibilities of other roles, as directed by management. All safety and operational parameters of the assumed role apply. c. Proficiency &

Qualifications/Requirement & Essential Functions To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Education/Certification: One-year certificate from college or technical school, six months to one year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience Required: Experience in an industrial environment using related tools and equipment. Six (6)+ months of training & close supervision in position. Skills/Abilities: - Ability to work overtime in order to meet the needs of the operation.
- Acute visual ability to observe product nonconformance. Visual ability consisting of strong close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Perform intense manual labor with long work hours. Ability to stand for a long period of time; bend, stoop, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, and move around work area.
- Ability to use hands and fingers to handle or feel, and reach with arms.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally, and 20 lbs regularly.
- Demonstrates skill in operating equipment.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to read a minimum of Jaeger 2 or equivalent type and size letter at a distance of not less than 12 inches on a standard Jaeger test chart.
- Cross-train in all other positions in Quality.
- Must be trained and certified to operate a forklift and trained and authorized to operate cranes. Visual Inspection of Welds, must pursue Level 2 UT certificate.

Mathematical Skills: - Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent and mass; and interpret bar graphs.

- Aptitude to calculate and use the following instruments – Scale in 1/8”, 1/16”, 1/32” and 1/64” increments – 12” to 72” long; Protractor Head, Diameter Tape – 100’s increments, Micrometers, Diameter Tape – 1/64” increments, 6” Vernier Caliper, 50’ Tapes, Ring Gauges, Squares, Levels, Line Levels, Various Tape Measures, Conversion Charts (Decimal to Fraction, Fraction to Decimal), Tri-Square, String Line, Feeler Gauges, Overhead Scale, Dial Indicators, Calipers

Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Can follow verbal and written instructions in English such as, but not limited to, Safety Handbook instructions, safety training materials, and machine operation instructions and procedural manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondences. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Travel: Negligible. Environmental / Hazards: - Constant exposure to an industrial and manufacturing environment containing applicable hazards consistent with said environment.
- Wet and humid conditions / subject to outdoor weather conditions such as heat.
- High decibel noise level.
- Frequent exposure to high, precarious places and vibration.
- Occasional exposure to fumes and airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.00 - $18.00 per hour
