Public Education Specialist

This Public Education Specialist will work in the Communications Department on the Public Education team in a variety of roles and functions focused on changing the behaviors of the people in the NTMWD service area through direct and indirect engagement, outreach and creating awareness of education programs for water conservation, environmental protection and related topics. Duties include educating diverse audiences on environmental and conservation topics through in-person and virtual settings such as presentations, meetings, workshops, tours and public events. This person will be able to plan and coordinate large, medium and small activities and events that result in awareness, environmental stewardship and behavior change. This position requires a creative thinker with strong writing and speaking skills. A self-starter with flexibility in their work schedule and a team player with strong interpersonal skills is necessary.

Major Responsibilities

1. Perform tasks associated with the creation and execution of public education and outreach programs for behavior change towards water conservation, water reuse, and other programs/resources supported by NTMWD.
2. Act as the lead on items related to current education programs to ensure deadlines are met and briefings are provided to management on the status and evaluation of ongoing activities. These programs include, but are not limited to: Water My Yard (WaterMyYard.org and weather station/rain gage systems); Water4Otter (Water4Otter.org and in-school programs); Defend Your Drains (DefendYourDrainsNorthTexas.org and Holiday Grease Roundup); Lunch and Learn sessions, landscaping classes and workshops.
3. Support the creation and expansion of education and outreach into Fannin County by working in a multi-departmental and multi-agency capacity to facilitate in-person and online education both in the communities near Bois d’Arc Lake and at the NTWD Lake Operations Center.
4. Provide tracking for outreach and education participation and reporting as required.
5. Provide in-person outreach and education at community events, meetings, workshops and other venues throughout the year. This frequently requires work outside of normal business hours during the week and on weekends.
6. Manage materials and branded merchandise for the Communications Department and for outreach and education purposes. Facilitate ordering, monitor quantities and organize storage spaces. Gather and provide items by request and for internal and external events.
7. Actively engage with consultants and vendors on active and future projects.
8. Collect, categorize, and save program or communication assets for internal records and sharing with NTMWD Member Cities and Customers.
9. Prepare presentation slides on public education activities, achievements and strategic initiatives for meetings, and presentations.
10. Host and/or participate in online and in-person tours of NTMWD facilities.
11. Provide content updates to NTMWD websites for the public education and outreach sections and other digital or print items.
12. Respond to requests for presentations, meeting/event participation, and provide answers and information to internal and external inquiries.
13. Collaborate with team members regarding strategic plans and initiatives.
14. Provide recaps of outreach and education activities and suggestions for improvements for increased engagement.
15. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

1. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
2. Proven knowledge in use of online tools such as: WebEx, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, YouTube, Mail Chimp, Eventbrite, DocuSign, Constant Contact, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and/or similar platforms.
3. Strong presentation and public engagement skills for both in-person and remote interaction is necessary.
4. Position requires poise under pressure and excellent communication skills with various leadership levels, city and civic members, and the general public of all ages.
5. Writing proficiency and accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines in fast-paced situations.
6. Experienced in creative and strategic thinking for problem solving and communication to groups of all ages.
7. Experience in planning and facilitation of public meetings is a plus.
8. Ability to connect a variety of topics in a way to align with NTMWD goals and messages.
9. Ability to objectively evaluate a program or activity, give feedback and constructive criticism.
10. Ability to actively listen and think critically.
11. Ability to pay close attention to details and perform with accuracy.
12. Knowledge of sustainability practices and environmental stewardship, including and not limited to: water conservation, pollution prevention, recycling, gardening, water wise plants, local wildlife, solid waste, water and wastewater.

Education and Experience

1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or five years related experience in liu of a degree) required.
2. Minimum of three years of related experience with examples of work demonstrating skills in the areas of major responsibilities above.
3. Experience in working with educators and/or teachers for in-person student interaction and programs.
4. Experience with environmental programs focused on behavior change.
5. Experience planning, coordinating and executing events.
6. Experience giving educational or instructional presentations to various audiences.
7. Experience using social media, including creating posts and being on camera.
8. Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License.

Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment

Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License. This position requires minimum physical exertion ability to pull, lift, and carry items up to and over 25 lbs. Significant finger dexterity required. Activities may include lifting, pulling, and carrying outreach and office materials, pulling and pushing file drawers, carts, displays, and bins, as well as climbing step stool and storing items overhead. Administrative duties are most often carried out in an office environment, with outside exposure to weather conditions expected during some community outreach events. Equipment utilized includes: multi-line telephone, laptop computer, Mi-FI device, LCD projector, shredders, copiers, portable screens, utility carts, pull-up displays and canopies and other event/presentation equipment/materials. Work activities will produce abnormal hours at times for outreach events which may require work before/after regular office hours and on weekends as necessary. Driving an automobile for NTMWD business will be required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $64,260.00 - $95,105.00 per year
