UI Health is seeking a Program Director (Assistant Director, Health Equity Programs) to join our Diversity & Community Health team. The Assistant Director, Health Equity Programs will be responsible for overseeing ongoing programming that supports UI Health's Community Health Equity alignment. This individual will be a strong operational leader, communicating objectives to their team and navigating unforeseen circumstances. The Assistant Director will be adept in working with healthcare partners and members of the community to improve health equity in the primary service area of UI Health.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Program Management:

  • Lead evaluation and analysis, including success metrics.
  • Share and use data to help create and understand the impact of programs to advance health equity.
  • Develop reports, presentations, and evaluations to share outcomes and productivity throughout the system.
  • Engage community partners with a goal of developing partnerships and coalitions to address community health needs.
  • Lead assigned internal and external initiatives to address health equity needs of UI Health patients and communities.
  • Manage quality improvement efforts focused on addressing health inequities
  • Collaboratively design, lead, and implement programs to improve access to healthcare, address social determinants of health, and reduce disparities in the healthcare delivery system
  • Develop, manage, and evaluate clinical and operational initiatives and processes to support safe, timely, efficient transitions of care, throughput, and improved patient outcomes across the health system.
  • Integrate shared leadership and foster collaboration across multi-disciplinary disciplines to arrive at decisions affecting the department.
  • Develop and deliver training to health system regarding health equity programs, and new initiatives at implementation and ongoing as necessary.

Finance / Budget Management:

  • Responsible for adherence to approved budget.
  • Participates in contract negotiations and/or preparations.
  • Monitors budget and expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility, assists with grant preparation and monitoring.

Project Management:

  • Manages quality improvement efforts focused on addressing health inequities.
  • Manages programs to improve access to healthcare, address social determinants of health, and reduce disparities in the healthcare delivery system.
  • Provides detailed data analyses and comprehensive reports to understand the impact of the department’s programs to advance health equity.

Staff Management:

  • Directly supervises clerical and/or technical employees.
  • Interview, hire, counsel, orient, train, assign, evaluate and mentor staff to meet departmental and patient needs, and health system objectives.
  • Determine personnel, material, equipment, and facilities needed to accomplish program goals._
  • Assign, direct and review the work of subordinates and other clinical/ancillary personnel.
  • Prepare formal answers to, and recommend the adjustment of, grievances and disciplinary matters when applicable.

Policy Management:

  • Oversees the development and implementation of operational and programmatic policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Develop and maintain hospital and departmental policies and work practices and procedures to ensure adherence to current regulations and best practices in accordance with Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), The Joint Commission (TJC), and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) requirements
  • Monitor and evaluate operations for compliance with licensure, accreditation and regulatory standards.

Minimum Qualifications Required:


  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A total of three (3) years (36 months) demonstrated work experience directing or supporting a healthcare program.

(Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in healthcare related field, social work, or business
  • Experience working directly with the community, patients, and providers, particularly in UI Health primary service area
  • Knowledge of health equity programming and social determinants of health
  • Excellent communication skills required, customer service skills, ability to train at different levels throughout organization.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent planning and implementation skills, including problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to manage resources and coordinate across multi-functional areas
  • Ability to direct multiple projects and tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines
