About the Organization:

The Detroit Urban League (DUL), also known as the Urban League of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan (ULDSEM), is a non-profit 501c3 organization that is one of 90 affiliates of the National Urban League. Since 1916, the DUL has provided critical services to disadvantaged citizens, organized the unorganized, and has established and promoted leadership of service to the greater Detroit community. The DUL has a broad-based Board of Directors representing corporate, financial, and service industries, as well as representatives from government, labor, and educational institutions. 

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is seeking new members aged 18 or older to join us in combating poverty in America. In exchange for one year of service you will receive a living allowance, medical coverage (if qualified) in addition to professional experience volunteering with youth driven organizations. This opportunity is offered through the Michigan Community Service Commission.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with organizations, groups, and individuals in a timely manner.
  • Build and engage with internal and external partners, including other VISTA service members, to recruit business participation in the program with program staff.
  • Promoting program to the community to increase outreach by developing communication resources to disseminate program information to schools, families, and educators, including a website, flyers, and any other graphic content as needed.
  • Assisting with the creation of educational resources in tandem with the program’s goals.

Qualifications:

  • Communicate effectively both oral and written; research, develop, present, and promote program to community, potential donors, and potential partners.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently support planning, development, and establishment of new programs.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Need to meet deadlines, follow instructions and accept direction on given assignments.
  • Experience in youth mentoring and/or program development is a plus.
  • Ability to work well within a team environment.

Benefits:

  • Living Stipend: VISTAs receive a bi-weekly living stipend of about $675.20, for a total stipend of $17,204.80 paid over one-year.
  • Education Award: Upon successful completion of the entire term, members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of about $6,895 that can be used towards eligible post-secondary education expenses, or a cash stipend of about $1,800.
  • Non-Competitive Eligibility: AmeriCorps VISTA members earn federal non-competitive eligibility, giving members an edge in the federal hiring process.
