Motional is looking for a Principal Product Designer to focus on our autonomous vehicle experience.

In this role, you'll be responsible for managing a team of UX designers in delivering a user-centered experience that will develop a sense of trust with customers and communities in which we're embedded. Our design and development process combines software and hardware-based elements and considerations. Success depends on strong collaboration with industrial designers, user researchers, product managers, engineers, and development/business partners.

Please submit your resume, and any information/materials that would best represent your capabilities, experience and interest in managing teams of designers.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead, manage, and foster the growth & development of 3+ senior designers, providing regular feedback and helping to set individual goals and plans to achieve objectives.
  • Manage high level goals and vision, and lead ongoing roadmapping for design as it fits into the larger program and wider organization goals.
  • Expect a 70/30 split between management activities and individual design activities.
  • Facilitate collaborative team sessions such as project team brainstorming, critiques, and retrospectives.
  • Lead the development of deliverables including user flows, wireframes, prototypes, etc.
  • Work hand-in-hand with
    • User researchers to drive understanding of key user needs, problems, and desires
    • Industrial designers on the design of components that require physical interaction
    • Product managers to define goals and focus work
    • Engineers to implement designs you create, ensuring quality
  • Identify and problem-solve when issues arise, shifting timelines and and defining approaches to meet new demands as needed
  • Communicate design ideas and solutions effectively to key stakeholders including senior leadership
  • Travel occasionally to various operational sites (Las Vegas, LA, etc.), to help facilitate on-the-ground user research and see the product in action (up to 25% travel)
  • Define how people interact with the future of autonomous vehicles!

What we're looking for:

  • You're passionate about solving hard problems most haven't faced before.
  • You're invested in helping other designers grow and perform above expectations as a team as well as individually.
  • You think beyond the deliverable at hand, considering how all components of an interconnected system work together.
  • You continually look to optimize processes to enable efficient and effective delivery of work
  • You're a storyteller, engaging others with delivery, identifying and clearly communicating key messages, and driving actions.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in UX Design, Interaction Design, Human Computer Interaction, or similar
  • 1-2 years of people management experience
  • 8+ years of experience in consumer-focused physical product design and development and/or service design, at scale.
  • Strong experience in all stages of the design process, from early strategy and ideation, wireframes and prototypes, to the final implementation of UI design.
  • Strong cross-platform design experience, including products with a physical or service component
  • Ability to lead major design initiatives with little guidance
  • Experience with planning large workstreams, meeting measurable goals and deadlines
  • Experience working closely with engineers in shifting across both waterfall and agile development processes [physical-hardware products vs. software-digital products]
  • Experience taking feedback from users, stakeholders, and colleagues and iterating on design
  • Solid grasp of user interaction principles
  • Ability to be flexible and inventive, using non-traditional approaches and techniques to design, given our product space
  • Experience with industry standard design tools, such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite

Bonus points!

  • Extensive knowledge of accessibility, such as work tailored to meet those needs
  • Experience with 3d modeling and design [Blender, C4D, Solidworks Alias]
  • Experience with Physical>Digital (exhibits, LEDs, physical installations, TVs, AVs)
  • Experience with sound design/effects
  • Experience with any sort of programming (i.e. JS/CSS, Swift, HTML)
  • Experience working in the autonomous vehicle, delivery, or automotive industry

If you don't meet 100% of the qualifications outlined above - that's okay! We encourage you to apply if you think this is a role that would make you excited to come into work every day and that you can deliver the results we need.
