Geotechnical Engineer - Southern California
Twining Consulting, an innovative engineering, testing, and inspection Company with 100 years of history, is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer for our Long Beach office. Qualified candidates must have a GE Registration in California, master’s degree or PhD in civil/ geotechnical engineering, history of increasing levels of responsibility, and a minimum of six years’ experience in geotechnical engineering. Candidate will be groomed for practice-builder-level position with near-future opportunities in southern and northern California.

Qualified candidates will perform the following duties:
- Oversee, manage and direct geotechnical engineering evaluations for projects with varying range of complexity.
- Provide senior review and oversight of geotechnical engineering practices at Twining, Inc.;
- Prepare subsurface investigation proposals and assist in the marketing and acquisition of subsurface investigations for Twining, Inc.
- Assist in the technical development of engineering staff.
- Assist marketing in business development, including attending short-list interviews as geotechnical expert, reviewing and evaluating RFPs/RFQs to help develop proposals and statement of qualifications.
Required competencies include:
- Command of both design- and construction-related aspects of geotechnical engineering.
- Experience in shallow and deep foundation design and Caltrans design of bridge foundations, retaining walls, MSE walls, and pavements.
- Experience with design of mat-type foundations and development of mat foundation design parameters.
- Ability to use Settle3D, Slide, AllPile, L-Pile, Shaft, CLiq, and LiquefyPro;
- Experience with field infiltration testing (borehole method, double ring infiltrometer) and development of design infiltration rates in accordance with guidelines prepared by Counties of LA and Orange.
- Exemplary technical writing skills.
- Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate clearly with co-workers, clients, and potential clients.
- Ability to maintain company established chargeability goals.
- Ability to work closely with the marketing group to help acquire geotechnical investigation projects.
- Master’s degree in civil/ geotechnical engineering.
- A minimum of 6 years of civil/geotechnical engineering experience.
- California GE registration required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; and
- Exhibits an advanced ability to analyze problems and develop alternative strategies to solve them.
Preferred competencies include:
- Experience in site-specific ground motion studies, including time-history analyses.
- Experience with high-rise geotechnical design work in City of Los Angeles.
- Experience with cement- and lime-treated mix design and field implementation per Greenbook.
- Experience with successful interaction with CGS/DSA/OSHPD/GMED reviewers.
- Currently, some of our projects include:
- 34-story high-rise building in the Arts District of Los Angeles – design of mat foundation and five-level subterranean parking level encroaching into the groundwater table. Design recommendations for installation of series of drywells for storm water management. Site-specific ground motion studies including time-history analyses.
- New Caltrans bridge over LA River in Long Beach – deep foundations, field exploration to consist of drilling off a barge in the LA River, pavement design, retaining wall design, site-specific ground motion studies.
- New buildings on local college campuses including CSULB, Golden West College and Harvey Mudd University – geotechnical site investigations with wet, soft soil conditions, potential for liquefaction, incorporation of rammed aggregate piers and mat foundations.
- New Clippers Arena in Inglewood – new arena and all associated amenities, geotechnical engineer of record during construction slated to start in Fall 2021
- New facilities at Universal Studios Hollywood – new confidential attraction, various amenities improvements, challenging geologic conditions with Topanga formation bedrock
- New facilities at local prestigious universities (confidential) – design and construction support services for medical office facilities, events centers, educational facilities
- Several new roadway projects in LA and Orange counties – roadway design, slope stability analyses, geotechnical design and construction support
