General Information

This is technical field inspection work which involves performing skilled tasks in the office and laboratory.

Walk-ins are welcome. However, priority use of the equipment will be given to those with reservations. Computer stations are limited in order to maintain social distancing and will be cleaned at the end of each timed reservation.

While on site, please take precautions to protect yourself and others from Covid-19 by wearing a mask and maintaining social distance as outlined in the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines.

Please also note that our lobby has limited capacity in order to maintain social distancing. No more than one person may accompany those using the computers and both parties must remain in the individual kiosk area that was reserved.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and a minimum of one year experience in a wastewater treatment plant or laboratory; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
: Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence. Mobile Area Water and Sewer System – requires that a Grade 1C Wastewater Certificate from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management is obtained within 1 year. The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Prichard – must possess a Grade 1C Wastewater Certificate from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK
: Good knowledge of the principles, practices and equipment used in wastewater pretreatment and treatment; good knowledge of the principles and practices of inspecting for and detecting improper discharges; good knowledge of safety procedures; good knowledge of basic laboratory procedures, mathematics, chemistry and biology; ability to deal tactfully, but forcefully with dischargers; ability to read and understand blueprints, diagrams and maps; ability to maintain records and to present clear, concise reports; ability to safely operate automotive and other equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, dischargers and the general public.

Description

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Inspects establishments to ensure that dischargers operate in accordance with specifications and regulations; inspects all facilities and equipment involved in the pretreatment of wastewater; collects samples for laboratory analysis; investigates potential or actual impacts of discharges on treatment plant efficiency; makes calculations related to pretreatment; inspects facilities for permit compliance; examines blueprints, diagrams and maps pertaining to the pretreatment program to ensure efficiency; maintains equipment and supplies; performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for inspecting commercial establishment effluents to ensure that no hazardous or unauthorized materials will be sent to the treatment plant. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures under the direct supervision of a Pretreatment Specialist II or other superior. The Pretreatment Specialist I assumes the duties of the Pretreatment Specialist II as required.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.
