Job Description
The Paddlefish Research Center operates as a cooperative agreement between Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and participating paddlefish anglers. The Department provides free fish cleaning services in exchange for donation of live paddlefish for research specimens and roe for use in caviar production as a Department funding source. The facility is staffed by a core team of collegiate interns who are essential for public interaction and scientific data collection.
Summary of Job Duties:
Under the supervision of a Paddlefish Biologist or other Department staff, assists with all aspects of Paddlefish Research Center operations including public interaction (greeting anglers, answering questions on regulations and paddlefish biology / ecology, and general communication of the Department mission and fisheries conservation), scientific data collection and entry (handling, measuring, and weighing fish or fish parts), operating equipment (watercraft, trucks, scientific instruments), and facility maintenance (cleaning, repairs, lawn care, etc.) Interns will be collectively responsible for paddlefish larvae collections on the Neosho and Spring Rivers. Additional wildlife and fisheries activities may include netting, electrofishing, creel surveys, and special projects as needed or assigned.
Must have the ability to:
  • Operate boats, motor vehicles, lawn mowers.
  • Operate and/or use personal computer, gill nets, seines, and water chemistry equipment.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and use outboard motors.
  • Lift and carry heavy materials up to fifty pounds, unassisted
  • Walk and jog over rough terrain for extended periods and must be able to swim.
  • Endure various extremes of outdoor weather conditions.
  • Must be available to work varied hours from 7AM to 11PM, weekends include, and taking school schedule into consideration.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in public speaking situations and be able to express oneself clearly and concisely in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Requirements:
Education: Must be enrolled in or have completed a Natural Resources Curriculum.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be skilled in interpersonal relations and maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
