POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Outdoor Education Program Director, the Outdoor Education Instructor is responsible for serving as front-line staff members, working directly with rental and school group programs as facilitators and teachers of a wide variety of adventure and environmental based activities. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for upholding the Judeo-Christian principles that are central to our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify the four pillars of character - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Salary Range: minimum $70/day, depending on experience
Regular Hours: Hours and days vary depending on needs of groups, subject to scheduling. Nights and weekends frequent.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Instruct and educate students in grades 1 - 12 in natural science through experiential learning.
  • Assist the Outdoor Education Coordinator with curriculum development, planning and scheduling.
  • Serve as group host, ensuring a high quality experience and providing a direct contact person for each individual group that attends camp.
  • Provide care of animals in camp nature center.
  • Work with Camping Program Director and Maintenance Director on light-duty maintenance and housekeeping tasks when groups are not on site.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; or one-two years of related experience and/or trainings; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals/ Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participants from all socio-economic levels.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee will regularly be required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear. The employee will frequently be required to stand and walk, and taste or smell. The employee will occasionally be required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee will regularly be exposed to wet or humid conditions, high precarious places and outdoor weather conditions. The employee will occasionally be required to work near moving mechanical parts, be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level of the work environment is typically loud.
  • Certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid, Blood borne pathogen training required after hire and must remain current.
